I'll take the Phantom.

After seeing a Maybach in the metal for the first time nearly a month ago now in Melbourne for it's launch around G.P time I can honestly say that I would gladly take the Rolls.

The car just doesn't look as special as a car of that price and status should. It just looks too much like a streched limo or a bigger, newer S Class.

The Rolls on the other hand looks like a big car but in every dimension, not just between the front and rear wheels but all over. This is what contributes to it's huge presence and mass. It can be driven by the owner and not look like he is an employed driver.

Take the rear compartments. The Maybach has very office like airline style seats while the Rolls has a lovely rear couch designed to relax the occupants and encourage conversation.I know where I would want to be.

As well as this the Rolls has innovations unlike other cars that require new levels of prestige thinking. The Coach Doors and centering wheel hubs to name but two.
The Maybach has features too but none that have not been available in other high priced cars or limo's.

I'm a Benz fan but in this comparision it's the Rolls for me.

To each their own opinion. The exact argument you brought in about the rear seat is what really turns me off from the Phantoom, not to mention tank like exterior. Actually it looks more like one of those transformers toys that will stand up and change into a robot.
For around the same price Maybach offers the new luxury and I bet it is more comfortable in the rear than Phantoom. The dash layout is also kind of sad looking in the Phantoom. Really no comparison to Maybach. But this is only my opinion.

High class rollers...

The Rolls may have the look, but that's all it's got...

It's essence is not a real drivers car, it's a car only to be driven in. The aerodynamics are a real problem for this car at high speed. It's slower than the Maybach and it's simple comfort for rear passengers to be sitting on a couch like sofa isn't my cup of English tea! The output of torque and horsepower are even less than a S 55 AMG car, which is saying a lot for BMW's sourced V-12! I am sure the engine of the Maybach will work more effortlessly and blow the doors off a Rolls anywhere, anytime. But maybe you think I am missing the point? Rolls and Maybach's are about honor and prestidge, of which the Rolls enjoys by it's name and history. The Maybach name has just awaken, but with the name of Mercedes behind it, what can possibly be wrong with it? Ok granted, the Maybach may not look like yesterday's rich man car, but that's because it is today's aristocratic people mover. Refinement and Power are at it's finest in the Maybach. Drive a Rolls back to back with a Maybach, and then tell me which is the better car to drive and be driven in? Looks are subjective... but overall comfort based on the facts and numbers point to the Maybach. I have tried to keep an unbiased point of view, but the magazine articles always sway towards the Maybach when the two are compared from the driver's seat and partially from back passenger seats based on unsurpassed comfort.

The Rolls lacks the technology and over engineering that Mercedes-benz so dilligently employs. The Rolls has only a name that Maybach so lacks publically.

I won't mind being caught dead or nearly dead (very old) in a Rolls, but as long as I am alive and able to drive, I'll be driving a Maybach!

I think that the exterior of the Rolls Royce is a bit more appealing than the Maybach'exterior. However, the exterior doesn't make up the entire car. The technology, speed, performance, interior and price also makes a difference. And if you combined everything while making up your mind, I would personally take the Maybach over the Phantom. But heck, if I have enough money, I might as well buy both

Just an FYI the Maybach actually is a very historic car. In fact Mercedes is digging this line up from olden times. The only reason it was lost is because of Word War II.

Just like the racing line of the 1950s this division simply disappeared until the very wise current generation execs bought them both back up
