Power steering often makes sounds -- not sure if the "rubbing" sound you hear -- especially when cranked all the way to one side or the other. Sure it isn't just "normal" sounds you are hearing?

Not normal for sure. Seal in the rack huh? That sounds complicated. You guys think I should be really concerned?

There are a few common causes for these noises.1) There is a plastic ring on the steering shaft boot that needs to be champhered.2) The radial shaft sealing ring on the steering racks input shaft needs to be replaced. Both are known problems. If your car is out of warranty the repairs can be rather expensive, and your car will need an alignment after they are completed. When a car comes in to my shop,I will usually do both. In my experiance it is usually the seal causing the noise. After the steering rack is out of the car it is very easy to perform the modification to the steering boot. If the steering boot is not making noise now-it probably will. If you repair them both at once, you will save yourself money and a trip to the dealer in the future. As far as being concerned with the noise-if you can stand living with the noise there is no cause for alarm. As long as there are no fluid leaks than the system will operate normally. Turn the radio up!!!

there is a rubber boot on the steering shaft on the engine side of the firewall that tends to make some squeeks, use a small hook, and pull down on boot, and apply a little grease to it internally, and this very well could take care of your problems
