I have a '97 E420 sport, It won't rev over 4k and cruise is not working. My local repair shop pulled the code for me and said they thought it was the drivers side front wheel speed sensor. I replaced it and still am having the same code and problems. Anyone had this issue that can suggest a good route to go. I don't want to keep putting sensors in if they are not needing to be replaced.

That DTC is just for a malfunctioning speed sensor and doesn't specifiy which one if you have more than one speed sensor. I know that the newer models (i.e., W211) have 4 wheel speed sensors, but I'm not familiar with your model.

thanks paul, my car does have 4 sensors, I have changed one already, so I guess I will change the others one at a time and hope that fixes the problem.

 

P0500 thru P0503 are all related to the speed sensors, but no DTCs for which one has failed. I don't know what type of electronic component the speed sensor is derived from, so it may not be as simple as using an ohm meter to test resistance operating range.

Your approach to replace a sensor one at a time is the only way, although costly, you're going to find outwithout having the ability to test them. How much do one of those things cost?

Found this on antother forum -- read about half way down where it talks about the sensor being either front left or rear left -- may save you $$ instead of buying 3 new sensors:

Vehicle speed sensor 'A' code P0500 (BAS,ESP,ETS,ABS - lights)
Facts:
Wife was driving through tons of water during a thunderstorm when the Dash lights above came on

Vehicle speed sensor 'A' - fault code P0500 'A', ML320, 2002 model
*Does 'A' mean it is on the left side front or rear wheel sensor
Please help?
Has anyone else replaced same?
* If so would this be classified as a rocket science project?
* does the sensor sit on the outside of the hub or inside the bearing?
* Front ball joints replaced 8000 km ago - could the job have messed things up?
* Any pictures or schematic drawings appreciated

If the Garage did the work how much did u pay?

I believe "A" refers to the actual fault that needs to be addressed, P0500 refers to an "idle control problem." Perhaps the high water penetrated your throttle actuator connector and the moisture is interfering with the electrical signals returning to the ME.

Miracles do happen but for how long remains to be seen
The mechanic I know ran a snap on trouble shooting code reader; producing Vehicle speed sensor 'A' - fault code P0500 'A', when he looked it up on the internet stated that the mentioned sensor above was on the left side of the vehicle either left front or left rear, but no further elaboration.
Here is the kicker he reset the dash lights and stated they will return - which they did, however, exactly one day after the initial dash warning lights came on they disappeared or were no longer iluminated all butthe check engine light but moments after this miracle the the engine light disappeared or were no longer iluminated - go figure

all the lights mentioned went on again but as soon as it dried up the lights dissapeared as above. Any suggestions?

You might want to double check the electrical connector on the "hydraulic control unit" located at the lower front portion of the inner left fender well. Moisture has created problems on that particular connector from time to time.

well the sensor I purchased was the left front and it was $269.00 "ouch" and I just ordered a rear sensor for $110.00. I will have to look into the water problem mentioned in the post you passed on, that could be an issue, although my problem is persistant regarless of there being any moisture. Again, I appriciate the input.

OK, so I have changed all the sensors, and my problems still is present, any ideas? Would really like to get this fixed with having to take it in.

 

I apologize for the stupid question, but did you reset the OBD2 code and/or drive 3 drive cycles to make sure the code is gone? You may want to find someone who has a scanner that runs on a PC/Palm that can graph various sensors to make sure the sensors are doing their job. I don't have any other ideas, sorry.

It's very possibly a connector or cable problem. This is diagnosed fairly quickly with the right test equipment. Sometimes the dealer is the best bet.

 

As of right now there are no codes present on the OBDII. I took it in about a month ago, and the dealer said it looked to him like the left rear sensor was causing the problem, it has been changed. Is there a proccessor or computer that these sensors run to that may be faulty, if so where is it? I hate to keep giving the dealer my money and not getting much help, we all know they are not very helpfull to those of us that can wrench on our own stuff. Thanks again.

 

I don't know about the 97's, but the newer W211 E class (03+) has the wheel speed sensors being input to the SBC braking -- don't know what else they provide input to.

Thank you all those for their wonderful posts.
I found the problem some time ago - (sorry for the delay) on my ML 320. It happens to be the brake sensor wire chaffed and the wheel speed sensor wires chaffed behind the left rear wheel.
as the wires cross the left main frame and along the gas tank.
The first pic (specifically the corroded area) is the offending section.
