Sqweeky Breaks

Please don't flame for not having searched, etc. etc. I did.

I just had a service and breaks were checked and found okay. But, they squeak a little bit. Enough to be annoying.

Is there anything that can be done? I do not want to go back to the dealership, but I will if I need to.

THanks.

Brakes require periodic maintenance.

No, not pad replacement.

The squeaking is caused by the pads vibrating.

Dampen the vibration by applying antisqueal paste to edges and back sides of pads. This paste washes off before the pads wear out, hence it's a mainenance item.

No such thing as a maintenance-free car.

Do not put grease on the back of the pads as this can cause the pads to squeak, remove the pads, take the smooth face of them off with glass/sandpaper and clean them with brake spray. Grease the sides(only the sides) with copper grease or similar and refit them. failing that new pads and disc will definaltey eliminate it but im sure youd rather not pay when the pads and discs are ok (except the squeak)

Care to explain the physics of how antisqueal paste on back of pads causes brake squeal?

Didn't think so.

A different point of view.

Gentlemen,
Our shop has had good luck with using Wurth's gold grease on the slides, wings of the pads and the backs. A light coat works nicely and there is no noise. I do agree with scuffing the pad's contact surface, to reduce the glazing, but lubricating moving surfaces has been very successful for us. This is not to insult the points of view of other people, just a relaying of my experience.

Fair comment but there is a document issued from mercedes benz telling technicians not to grease the backs of pads as the black coating on the back is the anti squeal part of the pad!

Yes it is, but it wears off. Nice circle corresponding to the piston. Can happen before friction material is to minimums.
