1982 380sl
I'm having a similar difficulty with my 82 380sl. In my case I was about to replace the o2 sensor but have not done so as the only replacements I've found would require me to splice the cable; whereas my factory 02 sensor has a cable release.
Do you know anything about the 02 sensor and the cables?
As per your question, I believe the light should turn off after 5-7 starts once the repair is made. Otherwise, I've read on a message board that you can disconnect your battery then reconnect it to reset everything. Hope that does the trick.

Not a big deal

one wire o2 sensor, the sensor body is the ground to the car.
The op is probably long gone since you dug up an old old post
