Note to "Ask Mobil":
Re. 229.51 spec oils
Hi, I'm trying to sort through a few things. Your spec sheet for M1 0W40 doesn't show that it meets 229.51 oil spec, yet the product in the store does. Somebody might want to address that.
We've heard that the new 5W40 Formula M oil is no longer recommended for Mercedes gas cars and is only to be used in the diesels. There was a TSB issued and they also claim they're reverting to M1 0W40 for their bulk oil. We've heard that there's some problem with (all) 229.51 spec oils and gas cars running ethanol blended fuels. Any comments on what the issues/concerns are?
Also, how can MBUSA be reverting to M1 0W40 for their bulk oil if it too covers 229.51??

Mobil 1 0W-40 does not claim MB 229.51 but MB 229.5 and that should be consistent with the PDS and the label per the information we have.
We are checking on the question regarding Mobil 1 Formula M 5W-40 for gasoline engines. Mercedes-Benz may be making changes in that regards, but at this time we do not have their final decision.

On the subject of Tranny Fluid I asked Exxon/Mobile and Pennzoil if they had an fluid that meet the mercedes spec. Exxon/Mobile said No.
Pennzoil said closely to this:
According to my reference material your vehicle requires a Mercedes-Benz P/N 001-989-21-03-10 (Shell 3403-M 115) atf. This product is not available in the U.S. except at dealerships.

Amsoil does have a product that they claim meets the spec. But so far it is Amsoil or MB dealer for transmission fluid.

I went to store and took a photo, but today it is different. Today is is 0w40 Eurpoean Formula with meeting MB spec 229.5 The previous oil was 0w40 but did not state Eurpoean Formula but without the container I can't confirm it meet 229.51

I have changed my oil twice on my C230 with Mobil 1 0W-40, and none of those bottles listed 229.51. I just checked the other 4 cases I bought and they all just list 229.5. I run E85 (Ethanol), and have been doing oil analysis since new, and have had good results with Mobil 1 0W-40.

30% reduction in fuel mileage, 28% less cost, improved throttle response, and less CO2 emissions. So it is basically a wash for me. Just trying to do my part reducing dependence on foreign oil, and promote development of alternative fuels. I will admit current corn based ethanol is not a good choice for that, but keeping demand high, will push for improved more responsible and economical forms of producing it.
I have also read that it reduces carbon buildup in the engine, but I can't physically confirm that.
