Updated Smartkey ID, Pt. 2

I've tried several times to reply to the previous string, without success (submit goes no where). So, here's an addendum on a new thread.

JamE55, like any other car company, I'd bet that MB will use up all its current stock of a part before moving on to the new versions, regardless of model year. (How many years did it take GM/Ford to exhaust their supply of 85 mph speedometers after they decided to change their policy... that one got lots of lampoons in the press.)

My C320 was delivered with the "213" keys in early May, 2001. If the 3-digit code is the ID that determines the age of the key design, then we have "old" key models.

Now, explaining rp430's "241" key is a different issue, mbtech.

BTW, Jam, your new avatar is distracting... Pleasantly distracting, of course! LOL!

Thanks for the info MB-BOB! No problem so far so i guess i'll just leave it at that.

P.S. MB-BOB If you think that's distracting you should check out the TEST section for a new sig i'm trying to work on. Actually it's like this...

Like rp430 a have a 213 key and a 241 key. The 213 has the black sliding tab, whereas the 241 key has the grey tab. Is the number designation a reflection of the color tabs?

I have a 217 with a grey slider tab, and a 221 with a brown slider tab. It annoys me to have two different keys. The 221 has a trunk button and the 217 does not.
What's the deal with the optional slider buttons? Do you order a certain color or are they replacable?

The color tabs are interchangeable. Their purpose is to determine which key is which, mainly for the key-dependent memory feature. "His-and-hers" keys.

So Dave, any clue as to where the "241" key fits into the scheme of things?

Well, it's not a 221, so it's not the newest version. I don't think the numbers are sequential.

Something I am not clear on in this thread. I have a C230K coupe that I picked up from dealer stock in late Nov. I have the older 217 keys. Is MB replacing keys or just changing keys as new cars are issued or old keys break?

I picked up my new G500 last week and it came with a 217 key because you can't automatically open the rear door like you can on other MB's. I don't think that necessarily means that I have an older model key.
