Command system software update

Just got my command system software update yesterday. Apparently during the software update, technician found out that the Command module version in my car is an early version that for some reason cannot accept the software update. So he ended putting a newer version of the command module w/the updated software.

Start up screen is showing the Mercedes logo now. Slightly different menu on some functions. So far it seems to cure the problem w/ CD changer always going back to CD 1 track 1 (on engine shut down)

Technician informed me that there is only one software update so far in the US and it is supposed to solve 5 different problems. Some of the problems involve the multi-function display on car w/command system and MB phone (which I do not have).

In Europe theres also a COMAND update for model-year 2001 vehicles [and some older S/CL class cars]. Its listed as fixing some problems with Voice Control [linguatronic], but the software is almost a year newer than the original s/w installed in MY2001 cars.

I imagine it fixes a lot more than just the voice recognition not recoginsing some selections on the CD ...

I havent yet found someone who has had the MY2001 updated installed on a MY2000 or before COMAND unit. (MY2001 onward has the letters on the keypad and the MB logo on startup) (MY2002 onward has more SMS features and only offers you the letters of the alphabet that could be selected when entering road names in nav mode)
[Anyone in Surrey UK, who wants to come round and try it, I have the disk, only if your car is still under warranty incase something nasty happens to COMAND!]

Actually this is a very good feature. I believe the BMW nav has this feature already.

Hopefully MBUSA will eventually make this upgrade available.

Actually MY2001 has SMS and the MY2001 COMANDs also had the alphabetical selection that would only offer you the alphabetical choice(s) that were possible.

In Europe, MY2002 Comand had extended SMS features over the MY2001 COMAND [I think being able to write SMS], I read somewhere that MY2002 (Europe) was the introduction of the nice input entry feature on COMAND.

The 1-slot Audio-30 APS nav system has always had that nice entry feature. I dont think thats available in USA though ? Adam ?

US COMAND has some "MB data services" that EU comand doesnt
EU COMAND has TV software/hardware, US doesnt.

I beleive its identical hardware [except the blank TV button] between EU and US but has different software loaded in it.

Adam:

In the US, only the S and the CL has this feature. As far as I know not yet on the 210 and 208. I am not sure about the new C-class.

I stand corrected

Adam:

I just obtained the newest Nav CD (7/01). Well I just found out that the "easy entry" is now standard feature on my E55 command system.

Apparently you need the software update combined with the newest Nav CD to use this feature.

Another nice feature that was not available before I updated the command module is the ability to be more selective when using the POI (point of interest) feature, such as the type of food (dining) and the distance sort.

I strongly recommend the software update (and the command module if necessary) combined with the newest Nav CD especially for the MY2000 command system.
