No. The service guys can disable, but it's not a user option.

Really?

"Service guys" can disable a government-mandated safety feature?

They can. It's up to them whether they will or not. There are lots of threads here about owners having TPMS disabled rather than replace bad sensors.

BTW, the law says that new cars must be equipped with TPMS that works with the original wheels and tires. There is no requirement beyond that because making replacing tires potentially illegal is a can of worms that they didn't want to touch. Similarly, no federal law prohibits disabling the system, although a dealer might not be willing. It would be up to states to pass laws mandating the use of functioning TPMS, as they do with seat belts. As far as I know, no states have TPMS laws.

Whoa..I thought (I may be wrong) that the CLS does not have sensors on the rims i.e. tire stem. From my SA I was told it was monitored by revolutions of the tire/calibration and would cause a warning if that changed for any reason. So what sensors are being referred to?

When I got my tires changed, the TPMS shot off the chart. After a reset, it was fine.

I think the older indirect TPMS (that works off the ABS system) is not used any longer. Without tire sensors, an indirect system can only detect differences between wheel rotation speeds and thus indirectly determine that one or more tire is inflated less than the others. If you let 5 PSI out of all four tires, an indirect system will not register a problem. This does not meet the new federal mandate's requirement.

I don't know what year each model that was indirect moved to direct, but late model cars would seem to need tire sensors.

can you disable the tpms by removing the fuse?

Are you off warranty? Why don't you get the system fixed? I don't think a fuse is work.

If it is just about changing tyres/wheels, why not move sensors to the new wheels or buy new sensors?
