03 clk500 brakes
so my brakes are squeaking but the low brake sensor has not come on yet. how sensitive/accurate is this sensor? should i go ahead and change the pads or just clean them?

Take a look at the pads first, you dont have to take the wheel off if you can get the right angle of view on it. If there is an 1/8 of an inch or so left, you may as well replace them, if there is more, you can try pull the pads out and apply brake paste to the back of the pads. They also sell a spray on anti-squeal stuff at most auto stores that works. Get the type for spraying on the rotors, not the pads, they sell both. But in my experience, the rotor stuff works better than a pad treatment.

Squeaking has no relationship to brake pad material being worn off.
Yes, some 'merikun cars use a noise maker instead of a light to indicate worn pads but your car doesn't.
However from an economics point of view it's as easy to just install new pads as it is to fix the squeaking from the old ones.
