Can I add AT Fluid via the AT dipstick tube?

I'm replacing the leaking AT plug adapter on a 2000 E430 4matic. I need to add about 1/4 quart of AT fluid. Can I do this using the dipstick tube if I use the requied "dipstick tool"?

Some posts say no, others say it's OK. Which is it? If no, how are you supposed to add fluid?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

It's the only place to add fluid.

Yes, you should use the special tool to verify correct level. Be sure to observe temperature specifcations.

You'll need a new plastic lock for the dipstick tube cap, as you'll have to break the current one off to get the cap off.

YES this is the only place to add it? But now the question is why do you have to add? If it is leaking you should have it repaired unless you are changing the fluids for preventative maintence.

When you replace the electrical plug--as he's stated he's doing--a fairly significant amount of fluid is lost. Plus, it's been leaking, meaning there is every reason to expect a need to top up the fluid.

On all 77.6 transmissions you can, on 722.9 transmissions you will a means of pumping fluid thru a fill plug on the transmission pan

Thanks for the help. As soon as it gets above -0, I'm going to try to tackle this. My only concern is how long the trans. will take to heat-up when it is this cold!
