Mercedes E 500 trans problem

I have just bought but not yet collected an E500 year 2002, the car is 135 miles away I am to collect it on monday. However, knowing it has a transmission problem. V8 engine with a tiptronic gearbox. the car is drivable. the battery will not hold a charge, it will ( after charging) fire the engine once. My question is: will a duff battery affect the gearbox, I dont know the exact nature of the fault, only that its drivable but faulty, being tiptronic it is electrically operated. I am taking with me a new batt.

I believe that model/year is subject to glycol contamination. Find out before you drive it and if it is you <may> be able to save the transmission with a trans fluid replacement and new radiator. Search the W211 forum for the gory details.

thanks mleskovar, I did drive the car back to my town( 200 miles, not 135) and it performed O.k. it snatched in low gears at slow speed, not very much though, and it seemed to shudder slightly, a sort of low rumble could be heared on climbing steep inclines at about 40 to 50 mph. I did something that maybe I should`nt have, I droped a cupfull of trans fluid down the dipstick tube, and this had an immediate effect, the rumble stopped and the ****** was nowhere near as pronounced. The car is going in to an automatic gear box specialist on Monday to drop the pan and fit a new filter and completely new trans fluid (7lts) he will also check the glycol rad, it looks o.k on the outside. I am a marine engineer so I understand, what you have told me. thanks once more and I shall keep you informed. this is my 3rd Mercedes.

If you have no antifreeze contamination you are doing well. Change the fluid and filter, and of course install a new battery with charging system funcition ok. Hopefully this will work out the issues. Top a the morin to ya!. vettdvr

It sounds like you were just low on fluid.....these transmissions react poorly to low transmission fluid level. Could be leaking at trans plug 0 rings. Get a glycol test done ASAP for peace of mind.
