Any relation between RENNTech intake and mass-airflow sensor?

The dealer replaced the mass-airflow sensor for the second time on my car and are claiming that it is caused by the RENNTech air intake. They are also saying that if I have another problem with it then MB will not pay for the MAFS a third time because of aftermarket parts. Any truth to this or are they just trying to fool me?

Thanks

How can a Renntech airbox be the cause of a faulty MAS? The MAS is a common fault on the MB V8.

I understand how the mass flow sensor works, that is why I cannot see any correlation between the two. Have I mis-understood something perhaps?

Maybe you can remove the air filter completely? Since this will not affect the MAS...

If you are implying that a change of AIR FILTER may cause the problem then say so, along with your reasoning.

Could someone please explain how the mass airflow sensor works?
Thanks

Check this link here The only issue with airfilters is that it is possible for a less restrictive air filter that lets larger particles through, to contaminate the filament on the MAS. Not all high performance filters do this though, so it cannot be used as a broad excuse. Secondly the filament is both shielded from direct debris and will also burn most pollutants off. I am not saying that it is not possible for the airfilter to negatively effect the MAS, just that it is very unlikely and only in the event that the airfilter used provides poor particle filtration. It is not possible for the Renntech airbox itself to cause this fault .
I would be interested to see arguments to the contrary.

Thanks for the info!

My concern is that fact that my car still shakes a little when I come to a stop, especially when I first start the car and the engine is still cold. Could it be possible that the dealer installed a faulty MAF again? The last one they installed only lasted about 500 miles until the car lost most of its power and eventually the check engine light came on and the car would hardly be able to accelerate and kept stalling.

Check engine light

When your car runs real rough, if you shut it off and start it back up does it run better?

When some error codes happen, the car can go into "limp-home-mode" and half the cyliders don't fire. The car has no power and can stall out. Shutting the engine down, re-sets the computer, but dosn't make the check enging light go out. The light has to be reset with the OBD tool.

This dosn't solve your problem but may help explain what is going on.

Great info about limp mode. Restarting the car didn't solve my problem when the check engine light came on.

What I'd like to know is whether I should just put my stock airbox back on, or keep the renntech? Any ideas?

Thanks

Have you contacted RENNtech about this? If so, what is their view on the situation and are they doing anything to help right the situation?

Yes I have, they said that the airbox should have nothing to do with my problem. They also said that if the airbox isn't on the air meter correctly and sealed, then there might be a problem, however it is on correctly.

Did you have this problem when you had your stock airbox still in the car? If not and this problem only started happening when you got the new airbox it is more than likely the RENNtech airbox causing the problem. I would remove it and replace the stock airbox. If the problem stops you know what the problem is. If it continues you at least can get MAFs under warrenty.

I didn't have the problem with the stock airbox, however I had the renntech airbox on for a year before the problem even started. I guess if the check engine light comes on again, I'll put my stock airbox on before going to the dealer so they don't tell me it's because of the renntech airbox.

Saif, does the RENNtech air intake system use a K&N air filter or an oil based air filter?

It's not K&N, I believe it's ITG, but I'm not sure.

The reason I ask is because both K&N and even ITG use a light coat of oil on their filters in order for them to work and to actually trap particulates while allowing air flow. However, this oil tends to muck up the MAS and if the air filter is dirty enough, even dirt particles will muck up the MAS as well. So your dealer has a very valid argument that your aftermarket part is the cause of the MAS failure. Even if you swap back to stock before taking it to the dealer, the stock filter is paper and there should be no reason whatsover that any oil should be on the MAS, so a competent mbtech will know that an aftermarket filter was previously installed.

I've never played with a MB MAS before, so I can't say for sure if this suggestion is even viable. But rather than replacing the MAS, clean it first and see if the problem goes away. I've done this on my previous cars that I mod'd and sometimes the problem goes away, but sometimes not. If it doesn't, you'll have to replace the MAS. Whenever you clean the MAS or replace it, be sure to clean your air filter and exercise extreme restraint in oiling it. Oil is the primary culprit in mucking up the MAS and dirt particles is the second.

Thanks for the info! I'll look into cleaning the filters.
