LED display on W210

I just had my '99 E in for a tire rotation at a tire shop. Got the car back and the left side of the LED display right below the spedometer was dimmed out...so I can't clearly see the outside temp. I guess it's just coincedince this just happened with the visit to the tire shop, but is it possible they could have messed this up?

My main question is has any one else experienced a dimmed out display and what is the most likely remedy? My MB specialist shop just said to live with it unless I wanted to pay big bucks to replace whole display.

It's just a blown out bulb. Just remove the cluster and change the bulb. You'll need to get the bulb from the dealer.

Same thing happened on my CLK. 5 days to get a complete new cluster under warranty. They don't stock them because there is only one place inteh US that can program the miles into them.

Every dealer can program the mileage into a new instrument cluster.

Both dealers in my area told me that only one place in the US can do it.

Why, I cannot imagine that a dealer has no Star Diagnosis computer. I guess US-dealers also have to meet certain MB-standards?

For some reason, we get different treatment in the US.

They have the computer but maybe the laws force them to do it this way. Motor vehicle mileage tampering carries a very severe penalty in California.

The mileage can be put into a new instrument cluster, but mileages cannot be lowered.
Overhere you can by such tools, but you cannot do it with the Star Diagnosis computer.

They probably didn't know how to do it...

It's pretty easy if you know how. And a non-dealer can do it with the proper equipment (frequency generator).

US dealers use a DFS system that works with the OBD II computer. The DFS does not have the capability to change the odometer mileage.

I do not think that you can program the mileage with a frequency generator!

But a frequency generator is part of the equipment larger European MB-dealers should have since midway the eighties for the ability of fully testing ASR-systems.

Maybe someone can tell me in detail how to do it with such a FG, I am curious.
