Question CLK 430 Idle

My 01 430 has an occassional rough idle when in park with a/c off at operating temp. If car is in gear and or if the ac is on the idle is much better. My dealer has checked for codes and found none and has told me that the 99+ v8's have this quality due to a very lean idle and when the car is in gear or with ac on the mixture becomes richer and therefore improves the idle.
I would appreciate the MB Tech's feedback and others as I don't recall this problem on the other CLK's I've owned and although the explanation seems logical the problem just does not seem right.
Thanks
RJC

Question

Does this occur when your engine is cold or also when your engine is warmed up? Do you have any mods such as a K&N or exhaust?

Has your tech tried resetting the idle speed?

They had mentioned idle speed but said it really shouldn't be set any different than the stock specs. The car idles smooth for a minute then gets a few slight stumbles with the occassional heavy stumble then smooth etc. I am bringing the car in on Mon am and I hope they can figure it out. Any suggestions prior to Mon am we be great. Thanks

Ask them to check your Mass Airflow Sensor just to rule that out.

I have a 97 E420 that does exactly the same thing, quite pronounced at times to the point that I have to make sure to keep my foot on the brake at a light so I don't surge too far forward. I have a K&N filter but the car did the same prior, I have been to the dealer over 1/2 dozen times on this since new and here is what we've done.
1. Replaced vacuum line
2. Replaced smog sensor
3. Istalled fuel filter
4. Reset Idle speed
5. Replace A/C system complete
6. Keep the car overnight and do absoloutely nothing but tell me the next day it is fixed.

I love the car but it is apparently going to be a trait one lives with, if you get yours fixed, please post the cure so I can try that.

I recently read an article in one of the car mags about the E class and buying a lease return, they mentioned the things that plague these cars but not this one so maybe it's just us. By the way, I had ALL the other bugs in the article too!

My car does not have a surging condition as you describe but a rough idle only when in park with the a/c off. I'll still keep you posted

RJC,

Have the techs tried cleaning/replacing the fuel injectors? Also, have the techs replaced or at the minimum checked your spark plugs?

Give us an update when you get back from the dealer. I'm curious as to what the prob was.

It's probably a software problem. I believe there's an updated ME control unit for the rough idle problem. Also, I've seen rough idle complaints on C240/320 and S430 models due to moisture in the crankshaft position sensor connector, but I don't think it applies to the CLK. Could be wrong though.

I have a similar problem on a CLK320, would I need a software upgrade, or is there something else that I'd need to check?

Many Thanks
