722.6 Conductor Plate - Will car stay in Neutral?
I am about to replace the conductor plate in my 2000 SLK 230 with the 722.6 transmission. After the conductor plate has been removed, I anticipate needing to roll the car. Will the transmission stay in neutral or will removal of the conductor plate cause it to go into park?
To head off the inevitable question of why I need to roll the car, I use my in-ground storm shelter as a mechanics pit. I much prefer to roll the car over the shelter for this rather than try to remove the valve body scooting around under the car on jack stands. The problem is I will probably need to get in the shelter and then roll the car forward to fully access the transmission. I don't want to get stuck in case the car goes into park. You may laugh now...

That is a good question, all I can add is that the procedure suggests that the shift lever be in PARK------FYI we did away with pits six months ago as they kept filling up with water.

As it turns out I have enough room witou having to move the car. However, the drian plu on the transmission pan wont' budge and the allen socket is stripping. Not a good sign for the first step...

Don't waste time trying to remove drain plug simply slowly start removing the pan with an extra large oil catch---then address the pan once on a bench

Conductor plate doesn't hold the trans in neutral, the 722.6 still has a mechanical shift lever so it will be in neutral if you disconnect the plate or not.
