Recommend a mechanics book
Hi Guys
Earlier this year I started to DIY on my car. Since then I have been sucking up information from all over the internet on all things "car". Due to issues / upcoming work, I have most recently been focusing on "vacuum system" and how brake calipers work.
Can somebody please recommend some books from authorities on the matter, where I can learn about the basics. Ideally I could read a chapter and learn about how brakes work, and another for ignition and timing etc.. you get the point.
I am talking strictly about the theory and happy to get scientific. I have a Computer Science major, so used to looking at the fine details.
I am not really looking for a simple book to help diagnose issues. I want to learn how the various systems work and variations on design etc.
Thanks so much.
(Asking because there are loads available, but there are probably one or two bibles, that everybody should read)

Your willingness to learn is your biggest asset. YouTube is great, but being a well rounded mechanic who has seen most things and has good problem solving skills can take a lifetime.

I don't wanna become that guy that just turns a nut here and there, exactly as the guy on YouTube did. But I also do that too
Thank you! CAN Bus is super interesting too.. I wouldn't mind trying to hack some audio control for my phone from steering wheel buttons.

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) has scores of good books. This is a classic: https://www.sae.org/publications/books/content/r-114/ I used to have a copy signed by the author. Those were the days.
Surf through the SAE website. I think you can purchase the books without being a member. Everything automotive under the sun is available there. Just depends on whether it scratches the particular itch you have.
