The way to go forward and save a bundle on good parts is to scan your car to retrieve fault codes.
One of your main modules is gently acting up to let you know it's going to need repair.
The Electronic Ignition Switch or your Electronic Steering Lock, Gear selector based on MY, optional equipment ...
> Current & Stored:
You'll want to pay CLOSE ATTENTION TO STORED CODES (as well as "currently active") because this is an intermittent type of issue.
> PLAN B:
Drop your SLK at your favorite MB specialist before it totally quits starting.
Gently taping on steering area may temporarily help (or hurt) if you're stranded away from help.
> FYI... no Surprise:
The VIP module that's becoming unreliable has a chance to "keep your car awake" and drain your main battery while disrupted.
A float charger, a whole-car reboot and jump-pack may all be helpful.
