First problem with my car

Naturally, I'm nervous because this is the first real issue I've had with the car and so many people have drilled it in my head that if you so much as sniff wrong around it; that's a $3,000 sneeze.

2015 GL 550 w/ 44k miles.

I'm going to try and get a video so you can actually hear it but I wanted to describe it first. I've only had the car for maybe 6 months or so and it just got an oil change (I do full synthetic) last month. For a few months now I started hearing this noise that would appear when I would slowly accelerate. From the beginning, I've said it sounded like someone was stretching the belt super tight. No clue if it's the belt but what came to mind was "rubber band/belt" being pulled extremely tight.

As of last night, it abruptly changed. It went from the sound I just previously described to louder and deeper and reminded me of two things; a lawnmower and my original thought which was - - when I was a little girl, just learning how to ride my bike, my dad took a clothes pin and a playing card and pinned it to my back bike spoke so I sounded cool. That's exactly what the car sounds like now - constantly.

I don't know much about what could possibly be wrong but what I am confident of is this isn't good, which makes me very unhappy.

Now, when I first bought the vehicle, I remember taking it on the highway and making a mental note that I thought the (ugh, I'm drawing a blank) ball joints? Ball-something felt like they were either bad or going bad but I forgot about it apparently.

Yes, I'm taking it to my mechanic but I'd like to take it somewhere tomorrow and my mechanic isn't open on the weekends. Not all shops work on engines so if I can determine what part of the car it may be, I can get a better idea of where to take it.

Thank you so much!

From your description it is apparent you need someone who knows a little about cars to drive it, a friend, family member or neighbor. There must be many competent shops in your area that can diagnosis the problem, but again you need help to figure out what they are saying and if it makes sense. Good luck.

Does the noise get louder and/or faster with vehicle speed?

Have you ruled out the engine, leave it in park and slowly rev the engine up and down, with the hood open and someone listening?

When I was hearing a loud scraping sound I had someone drive my car slowly up and down my driveway while I walked beside it, I was able to figure out the location of the noise. Was coming from the rear drivers wheel area. Then i got it up on a jack and was able to tear into it and see the parking brake pads came undone. Not saying its your brakes, just the steps I took to find it.

Since you are taking the car to have fixed just make sure they show you the issue so you can see for yourself.

Yes, the noise gets louder and faster with speed, not engine RPM. It's definitely from the wheels, not the motor. I'll have them show me the bad parts when it's on the lift. Thanks for the tip.

Sounds like you might be describing a wheel bearing. Does it get louder/change pitch in a curve or when you hit the brakes?
