Hi all, recently purchased a 2013 G63 with 50k miles on it. Heard this today while idling and I’m super concerned now. Is my car a goner or am I just a paranoid schizo?

 

I can't hear anything...

Is this standard VVT rattle or bend/loose rod knock?
Bore scope cylinders walls for impacts.
Visually inspect oil filter for light metals.

 

Get it checked now. That's a failing timing chain tensioner. Common on your engine. Ignoring it can lead to catastrophic engine damage if the chain jumps.

 

I can't hear anything - certainly not if any knock is something from top or bottom end.

What I hear sounds like my m157 and normal

but I know that if I was sitting there in front of the engine while it was running, I may be able to hear a knock that I'm not able to hear based on your recording.

can you get an audio clip with the hood open from outside the car near the engine bay and can you also get a video clip from the exhaust side just in case this is a misfire you're hearing?
