No-start issue on OM651 diesel — P0341 CKP/CMP , strange behavior

Hi all,

I'm dealing with a puzzling no-start situation on an Infiniti Q50 fitted with the Mercedes OM651 diesel engine and hoping someone here has seen something similar.

The symptoms: The engine cranks but will not fire. Pulling fault codes gives a P0341 — crankshaft position sensor signal out of range or out of sync with the camshaft sensor.

The strange part: When I physically disconnect the crankshaft position sensor, the engine starts and runs. The moment it's plugged back in, no start.

This points to a signal conflict rather than a simple sensor failure — the ECU seems to be getting confused by what the CKP is reporting rather than helped by it.

What I've checked so far:
  • Replaced both the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors — problem unchanged
  • Sensor wiring continuity — within spec
  • No obvious damage to the reluctor ring
  • No other fault codes active
Has anyone worked through a P0341 on the OM651 with this kind of behavior? I'm wondering if this could be a tone wheel timing issue, a shielding/grounding problem on the sensor line, or something ECU-related.

The issue came after replacing the clutch and flywheel...
Any leads appreciated.

Morgan

You have this almost solved : replacing your flywheel caused CKP correlation issue with camshaft.
How is the special notch identifier set in relation to engine TDC1 ?
The flywheel is not all identical teeth... there's a patern the ECU syncs with camshaft position.

Nothing points to bad/open wiring harness only bad timings to sync your diesel injectors.

If you will change your streched timming chain with a new one everything will be OK.
