Purchasing car in GA, titling in VA.. questions

I'm getting ready to fly down this weekend and purchase a car in Georgia which will ultimately be registered in Virginia. The dealer charges a dealer fee, gives me 30 day tags and tells me that I then register it in Virginia (including taxes and tags).

1 of the 3 banks I spoke to claims that I will be required by law to register and title the car in GA, and then I'll have to retitled it in Virginia, essentially paying sales tax in both states. I've spoken extensively with the dealer, and they claim no such thing. The dealer has a A+ on BBB, and seems pretty legit. The one bank claims they can't give me a loan unless I title and register the car in both states, they claim the title won't be "clean".

Anyone have any insight into this process?

I don't think bank 1 knows what they are talking about. Call your local DMV and see what they say.

Agreed. Whoever is telling you that is clueless, and the dealer is correct. If you buy a car in a state other than your own you don't pay sales tax/registration fees there, you pay them in your home state. Been there and done that many times.

FWIW, my sister purchased a new car last year in MD and lives in VA. 30day tags were MD and sales tax was VA rate, not MD. All the info was sent to DMV in VA. Only thing that she had to do was get a VA safety inspection.

I've bought a couple of cars in Georgia and registered them in Florida, most recently my SL55. The dealer charged Florida sales tax and remitted it to Florida.
Who is the dealer by the way?

Malone's Automotive. They said I'll just pay dealer's fees, then they mail the title to the lienholder, and I register and title it back in VA.

I am well versed with Malone's, been over there several times. I never bought a car from them, but what they told you is correct. All the cars I bought out of state happened that same way. Reregistration and taxes are paid only in your state.

The bank is talking crazy.

Exactly what everyone says here. The fact that they tell you you have to pay sale tax twice in two different states so complete BS. Find another bank.

I bought my car in PA but it was titled in VA. The dealer gave me PA 30 day temp tag and did all the paperwork with DMV in VA to have the title done in VA. The only taxes added to the invoice were the VA sales tax and 20 days after purchase I recieved the VA title and tags. The bank is simply wrong here.

Im surprised you are getting a loan without paying your state taxes up front (VA taxes only). Most times, the lending institution requires that up front, at least that is the way it is in NC. If you were paying cash, then it is a different story. When paying cash, you pay dealer fees and $1 for a 30 day temp tag. Then when you register the car in your home state, you will pay the applicable taxes. As stated before, bank 1 doesn't know what they are talking about.

I know Scott and David Malone fairly well.. They're great guys and their cars are always mint. Like everyone else said, you only have to register the car in VA.
