Why did you buy your AMG sedan? You could wait 15 years, drive a Saturn in the meantime, save and then buy your E Sedan AMG for a lot, a lot less! Heck, why pay a premium for your E sedan AMG????? Just get E 320, or 350 sedan used and pay much less. Why pay premium?
So here we go one last time: Yes, I (and others) paid a premium for the wagon over the sedan. But I WANTED a wagon. I like the look, the fact that it is a rare vehicle, it is unique in its segment, it is a sleeper, it has a 3rd row seat for my kids, has a larger trunk, car enthusiasts get it, my wife loves it as well (for those of us married).
Basically I like apples, you like oranges. I don't mind oranges and even like them but I am not going to constantly argue over apples being better. To each his own.
However, I don't think it's fair to say that the same car in sedan/wagon(that is the same car/engine/drivetrain/chassis, etc...) is the same as comparing an AMG to a Saturn(which truly is Apples to Oranges).

I'm with you, Buzz. Given the premium on wagons of late you could purchase a nice AMG sedan and a pedestrian E-class wagon and be money ahead. Of course, not everybody can or wants to own multiple vehicles. The wagon premium is high enough right now that I decided not to jump back in when car shopping earlier this year. Decided to go non-Benz for the first time in 20 years.
Funny thing is, the premium seems to come and go. When I sold my perfect 74K mile 2006 wagon in fall 2014, the phone didn't even ring when I had a $30K asking price. I believe Ali had a similar experience earlier this year.
And now we see 2007 wagons asking $40K. That is a lot more than I paid for my 2006 when it was several years younger, had fewer miles, and was CPO certified from an MB dealer. The current numbers sure don't work for me.

As a car enthusiast, I do not care who paid what for what car or model...If we all had the same taste, we all would drive the same cars. We pay for what we want and will find any justification for it to confirm our decision. Wagons are wagons, sedans are sedans, 2 seaters are that and so are SUVs. Trying to convince someone they paid too much, or another car is better is pointless as an exercise.
Maybe I am a bit touchy today?!$%?

Other folks want a wagon because it is unique and rare. Perhaps this latter category of folk are willing to pay a larger wagon premium because the decision is more emotional than economic? Just a thought.

That wagon for $40k doesn't even have the P2 package and the front rotors are aftermarket. Personally, I don't really care about mileage as much as I care about documented maintenance history. If I had to choose between the two, I'd definitely take the latter any day. IMO low mileage vehicles are overrated because you still have to have proper maintenance done to them - otherwise you're going to get screwed twice over: paying more fore low mileage, and then paying more to get proper maintenance done.
The overall car market is on the upswing as the economy is seemingly doing well and people have more expendable income, anything remotely neat and rare will cost more and unless you're ok waiting around for a deal you'll have to pay.

Iridium Silver+Black Leather, no modifications, and the owner claims it still has extended warranty coverage. This car will sell very fast.
