Hey guys. First post but I've been creeping on the site for a year, learning about and drooling over your E63 Estates and building up the courage to pull the trigger on one. Looks like one (of the 24! in the US) popped up in SoCal. Anyone seen it in person or have more info? How do I tell if it has the updated software that I believe occured on some of the '09's? I realize that I am in the minority here (based on the number of charcoal mb interiors, especially in AMGs), but I don't see the appeal of black interiors. For my taste, the only way to go for any MB interior is tan. I realize that is going to make my E63 Wagon search and long and painful one.

That one is very close to my dream e63 wagon. It even has distronic!! If it only had cashmere interior, then it would be my dream wagon.

It's in the description. Plus you can see in the photos that show the front grille. If there is a solid piece of plastic over the lower center of the grille, then it has distronic. See here.

Although there are no pictures of the interior of this car, you can also spot distronic on W211s (and W219 CLSs) by looking at the controls around the gear shift lever. If there is a black roller dial to the left of the shifter, it has distronic.

So gents, I've spoken to the seller, who's s'posely dumping this for the 2012 E63 wagon
He's waiting for the auction to finish, claiming there are quite a few watchers. 2 things:
1. Uhm, please, no one bid
2. It's a Manhattan car. He claimed it was impossible to drive in the snow, but it'd be nearly impossible to put on ~14K mi/year in The City if parked during winter. Thoughts on the salt's impact on Benz's new-and-chitty water based paint + undercoat?

Thoughts. How the car drives in the snow is totally dependent on the tires it is wearing. Typical summer tires (stock Continentals, Michelin PS2, etc.) will render it essentially undriveable in any amount of snow. It's fine with a decent all season. I had Conti DWS on my E55 sedan and it just motored through 6 inches of snow with no problem. The traction and stability control on these cars works really well. So the answer is, it depends.
The car has only been through 2 NY winters, so there is limited opportunity for rust problems. Three Stars car has a lot of miles put on in snow country, so you might ask him (?) how the car is faring. IIRC, that car spent its entire life in the salt belt.
I tend to agree that putting on 14K miles/yr while parking the car for ~4months/yr is a bit hard to believe.

Otherwise, reagrding MB paint and undercoat, my car has spent its whole 6 year life in the Northeast between Boston and NY and now back to Boston and it is in great shape. The underbody looks pretty much spotless even after all that, and I have 71k miles so you know it was driven year round. Hope that gives you some piece of mind.

Snow Driving
Both my M5 and E63 have been driven in the snow with no problems. I agree its down to the tires. I put some Nokian Hakkapeliitta in a -1 configuration on steel rims with my M5 and had no problems with snow up to around 6 inches. I run Michelin Pilot Alplin PA3 on my E63 and have passed many a 4x4 in the ditch. Half of driving in snow is physics management and the other half is having the right tools (tires) to do the job safely.
When I lived in Germany I noticed that the Germans would religiously switch from their low profile summer tires to winters as soon as the evenings started getting cold. They looked at me like I was speaking Chinese when I asked about all season tires..lol! The only all-seasons that I found were on Allrad (all wheel drive) vehicles at the rental car facilities. I also found out that you really don't want to drive the original Blizzaks on the autobahn or anywhere you might get up over 80 mph and be called on for a hard stop.
