Already taken care of! LOL I left the AMG flat badge though. Just gotta adjust the driver headlight, think a screw is loose. Need to figure out want to do with the black trim on the doors. Owner sprayed them matte black.

U can try sanding through the matte black with 1000/1500/2000 grit. It will be sort of time consuming but u can get through 90pefcent of the black using 1000. Then remove all with 1500. Then hit it with 2000. Then Polish. It should give u a better than factory gloss left behind. This all assumes therr wasn't problems with the finish when they got painted black. Most likely used a rattle can so the paint didn't have harder. Shouldn't be too much work.

EDIT : realized u were talking about the chrome trim. I probably wouldn't try my suggestion.

Any plans for the gloss black grill u removed?

Oh, you were right the first time. I was talking about the upper part of the door frames. Ill have to try that and hope I do a good. Going to have to read a bunch of DIYs on that lol.

However you are correct about the chrome strips too. I think the easiest thing to do for that is to find used ones in the junk yard. Unfortunately the only issue i am having at the moment is that people don't want to take the trim off the doors or bumpers. I also can't seem to find the correct part numbers for them either.

As far as the grills? I have 4 spare ones right now.... hahah PO couldn't decide what he wanted.
the 4 options are
1. Gloss black - pictured above looks almost new
2. Matte black -
3. Black one with chrome strips with the huge mercedes star
4. OEM distronic grill painted matte black - needs to be refinished.

Let me know if you'd like one.

Glad to see that you're putting the car back to stock and taking care of removing the black painted window trim. You'll also notice the previous owner panted all of the chrome inserts in the trim pieces body color which looks odd. At some point the car wore 19" W219 CLS55 AMG Styling III wheels.

Thanks and you are right, it did have the 19s which i didn't prefer.

there is also some black paint along the front bumper, hard to notice so I might leave it there.

I am trying to figure out how to take care of the chrome strips since I've read they are a pain to remove and ordering new ones is $$$$$

The car won't be completely stock though, I'd like to do some reasonable performance mods.

Car free at the moment
The window trim on my wagon had a bit of a purplish metallic hue, which I always assumed was sun damage. It didn't look too bad with Obsidian Black so I left it alone. The car spent its time in Atlanta and then Dallas. Perhaps the previous owner of your car was covering up the same? Anyways, my point is that if you strip the matte black, you might not be completely satisfied with what you find underneath.

Yes, that is my biggest worry. However if that is the case, then i'd just cover it back up in a gloss vinyl instead of matte. The matte just looks out of place. Good news is, this car seemed to be garage kept most of its life, interior still smells brand new and not much as far as fading/cracking on the rubber trim pieces as well.

Kevro, Ill shoot you an email this weekend with the grills.

The owner in Iowa painted the upper window trim black and it was originally body color. The owner was trying to give the car a look that was inspired by BMW's Shadowline trim.

oh yea? Did you know the owner or car? I believe it went through 3-4 owners. Doug the guy in Iowa owned it twice which is the guy I purchased it from, he didn't seem like the type of guy to do any mods. He bought it from a guy in California and then a guy in Colorado bought it from Doug and traded it back to him for a Porsche. That's all I know from talking to Doug. All I know is that it's not done quite right so I'd like to correct it if possible without painting it again. i do worry because usually you have to sand/prep the surface for paint to adhere correctly.

I would leave it alone...Makes the ride unique!

I did know the actual owner of this car. The entire trim piece was repainted and the car had other paintwork (e.g. passenger rear). It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to remove the chrome inlays without creasing or cracking the finish. I would recommend sourcing them from a donor car or purchasing them new. You should also note that Mercedes-Benz sells them pre-painted and unpainted and the prices are significantly different. As the new owner of this car I can empathize with how annoying it is that someone ever painted those pieces but you're doing the right thing by putting it back to stock. Glad this car found its way to good owner.

Gonna make this car look even better! Few things to work on and then possibly on to some power mods, nothing outrageous but wouldn't mind that extra edge.

anyways I need to stop hijacking this thread! LOL

Hey guys, wow, a lot of information in here. I have been following this thread for over a year now. Looking for some help as I am trying to see if I can join the AMG family.

Anyone know anything about this car?
https://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-...elCode1=E63AMG

Seems like a sketchy place based on reviews. For me, I would need to add the third row as others have done.

Thanks.

This thread has generally been for W211s, but as far as third rows, I wouldn't worry about them as they do not fit adults at all and kind of useless unless you have kids

That's exactly why I bought a W211 AMG wagon. It's the last generation that came with the 3rd row stock.

Retrofitting a 3rd row in a W212 is $$$ and then there are insurance implications since the AMG variant does not come with 3rd row stock.

My kids are about to outgrow the 3rd row seats here in another year or two - time flies so fast!

What's the usual age group that this 3rd row seating is good for?

Thanks
