Hi
I started looking at a Modwright modded version that sells used ~ $2000 The modifications along with the tube based output stage take it to a whole new level of performance.
But I think I will shift my focus now to getting a new better tube based electrostatic headphone amplifier to go with my Sennhaiser HE60 headphones as the stock HEV70 amp is not doing them justice. That in its self will run from $1500 up to a few K.
Good luck with the sale, did you try audiogon.com ?
Regards
Darius

I would not get modwright. yes it sound better. but resale on it is hard. I would personally get better DAC section.. I ran my transport with a nagra DAC before and it sound un-believable.. but that dac cost $12k.
Have you ever listen to STAX headphone.. if not , try it.. A total different level than senn. but the funny part I own the HD800. and running though my Narga equipment. not still not STAX performance.
enjoy what you got.. audio is a never ending game.

I have listened to Stex several times on varies amps up to $6500 RSA A10 http://raysamuelsaudio.com/products/a-10 and Blue Hawaii http://www.headamp.com/electrostat_amps/kgbh/index.htm
Personally with the music I listen to it was not the best match while still being very high level headphones that I respect very much. I'm also not a Sennheiser guy aside from my HE70 Baby Orpheus

I'm a big Grado fan and have RS1 and HP2 and power them with RSA Raptor http://raysamuelsaudio.com/products/raptor (tube amp as well) and they have great synergy. I did own the Grado GS1000 but did not find them match well with my tastes for the $1000 cost. I'm still thinking to try the new PS1000.
Have you tried the Senn HE90 Orpheus out of a good amp? or the HE Audio Jade that are HE90 reproductions? There is also now a renewed interest in Planar Headphones, for example HifiMAN HE-6 or Audeze LCD-2 Orthos.

I have a Modwright modded Sony 999ES and I'm very happy with it. Sounds wonderful and I chose it over Meridian G08 that I also like very much. Very true about resale price. I paid $3200 and might only get $1600 for it now if I wanted to sell. But I'm very happy with it.

I owned HD580, HD600 and HD650 and I did listen to your HD800 powered by RSA B52 http://raysamuelsaudio.com/products/b-52 and Meridian G08 and I was very favorably surprised how well they performed. They definitely can take advantage of a solid amp over some lower end amps.

hey.. I had a Sony 999ES and SCD-1 when I was a Sony ES dealer. Then I sent the 999Es to modwright.. It sound better than my SCD-1.
But when it was time to sell both. Modwright 999ES lost money for me.
I have not tried any Senn HE series. Grado's were also great. those were my best selling headphone at that time. But it did not fit comfortable on me.

Very true about Grado fit issues for some people. Many have found that the old style flat pads are much more comfortable. I think they also come with RS1 but can be purchased separate as a replacement. These are the same as the ones that came with their now legendary HP1/HP2/HP3 headphones. The new 1000 models are much better fit.
