At what mileage did you replace the tires on your ML55? I'm trying to come up with a reasonable average life expectancy.

I have 24,000 miles on my 2001 and I'm running the original tires. When I replace them I'm considering the Pirelli Scorpion Zero or Yokohama AVS.

Get the Pirelli's
The Yoko AVS Sport and the S/T tires both get very (and I mean very) loud as they wear. At 10K they will be unbearable. My friend has the S/T on his X5 and at 10K they are so loud that his wife told him she won't drive it until he gets new tires...my truck with Goodyear All Terrain tires at 33K is MUCH more quiet. The regulat AVS Sport has the same problem, but they don't get quite as loud as they wear.

The Pirellii's are loud also.
I'm almost down to the wear bars on a set of Scorpion Zeroes on my ML430 and these Pirellis are quite loud also. They seemed relatively quite when new. But they progressively became louder with wear. But the Pirellis are a definite improvement in handling over the stock Dunlops. The Pirellis seemed to be a much tougher construction than the stock Dunlops also.
I may have caused some uneven wear early in the tire life that led to the eventual excessive tire noise. On a trip to Alaska I experienced a considerable build up of mud on the inside of the wheels. At one fuel stop I tried to quickly wash off some of the mud. But my sloppy wash job left some patches of mud intact which upset the balance of the wheels in the process. I drove at least 500 miles with the wheel imbalance before I found a place where I could clean the wheels more thoroughly.
I’m about ready to either buy a new set of tires or trade up to an ML500. I like the overall handling of the Scorpion Zeroes, but the noise is definetly an issue. Has anyone else found the Scorpion Zeroes to be excessively noisy? Also, I don’t have much experience with the Scorpion Zero tires in the snow. Can anyone comment on traction in ice and snow?
Thanks.

Don:
Thanks for your input on the tires. Go for the ML500 they are really sweet SUV's. The performance is much better than the ML430 and not far off from the ML55. At under $50,000 it's a bargin!

I agree Scorpion Zeros are very loud..
I have the Scorpion Zeros mounted on my ML also and they are extremely noisy on the verge of unbearable at highway speeds. Its true they don't start out this noisy since I didn't notice the noise until about the 20,000 mile mark. It has since been getting progressively worse at 24,000 miles.
At first I thought the noise was unusual but from the feedback I have been getting it looks like the more wear on the tires leads to more noise! So I have decided not to purchase this tire again.
Does anyone have any experience with Michelin Diamaris? This seems like a good tire in terms of noise and performance. I've been trying to find the tread wear data on it, but it doesn't show up on the Michelin website. Are there other tires I should be considering? I am running 285/50/R18. TIA
