Question for Catalytic Convertor

The catalytic convertor in my 2000 ML55 is rattling.
It looks like the honey comb inside is broken loose.
Does anyone had any luck finding one besides the dealer?
Thanks
Barry

Should be covered under warranty if under 85K miles if not maybe SOL, check though because it might be based on years versus mileage on vehicle.

When ever I push it in the ML, I smell sulfur from time to time, mine are going to go soon. The ML has 2 catalytic converters. At the dealer I have been told it is a 2400 dollar repair job. I guess id find myself a meineke.

Sulfur smell means that the cats are working and reacting to the different driving conditions. The smell is sulfur in the fuel that is being converted to hydrogen sulfide. Under very lean situations, sulfur will build up in the cats and will get burned off when the engine starts running richer.

Check the exhaust junction after the engine, you might have a cracked seam where the support is tacked on to the exhaust. My pop's ML had that problem, but it was a 320 not ML55.

I always thought that sulfur smell comes from a rich condition.
It would make sense that you get the sulfur smell under heavy acceleration because you are dumping lots of fuel to the combustion chamber when accelerating aspecially when climbing a hill with full throtle.

It does. When cruising, the lean combustion condition doesn't give the cat much to burn which can cause some elements and compounds to build up. Once the combustion goes rich, the unburned fuel lights off in the cat and the temps increase to the point where everything starts to burn off.
