Yes, the mileage is not that great BUT with the speed you'll get, you'll be out of there that much faster. Besides, where in south Florida won't you be able to get gas if you know in advance of the hurricane. Typically we know about 3-4 days minimum where it'll hit and at least 24 hours exactly where its going. I-75, I-95 and the Florida Turnpike have tons of gas stations and unless you're leaving just when it hits, range should not be an issue.
Or you could opt for a Prius and get out of there at a rapid rate on the wings of a hurricane westwind. You may not be driving, BUT you'll sure be flying!!!

Had to evacuate on 2 occasions in 2004. First time went to West Coast and returned the following day on one tank of gas in my 2003 X5 4.4 - about 430 miles. It was nice avoiding crowded stations. Second time it was a last minute decision to evacuate - I couldn't believe that we could be ground zero twice in a month. I headed north and had to stop for gas at about 200 miles. Everybody and his brother was lined up for gas at all the stations off 95 at that point - really annoying. From now on all my trucks will have a 400 mile range in the tank at the first sign of a hurricane. PS you would be extremely lucky to average 35mph in an evacuation.
