test drove the ml55 2003 on saturday

at a private lexus event on sat. drove the ml55, escalade, and acura mdx

worst -> best

mdx, escalade, ml55

mdx is a honda civic minivan, so bad, feels like a 2.3 V4 V-tech engine, this car is like a 16 year old ricer car, but somehow it is a SUV, absolute garbage, yet i expected so much

escalade is a pinto-material, odometer had 500 miles and the leather had crack lines and folds all in the bottom part of it, inside interior is garbage (0 out of 10) and the ride feels like a pinto

ml55 handles like my s-class, the steering wheel turns like the s-class, the shifting is not as good as my s-class, but very close, the whine of a supercharged v-8 is something to be adored, ride is that of my s-class too, interior can be improved, however its a first-time model of ML although i dont like the look of the ml, it is a true mercedes.

Off topic:
Lexus interior is so much better vs. mercedes, I didnt get to drive one, but I would say that the shifting is not as good and I dont know about the steering, ever been in a sc430? everything is leather, and not just regular leather, leather on top of your dash and on your seat belt holders are "plush" you can push it in. Also the leather is on the visors, real nice, real nice leather, amazing interior, leaves benz in the dust, however on the lines of reliability and looks and reputation, it cannot match up.

The ML55 is not supercharged. I'm not sure about the "whine" that you were hearing, you might want to have the service department check into it.

MercedesSChink,
You're calling me an idiot and you don't even know what you own. ML55's are not supercharged today and there are no plans to supercharge them in the near future. Look at your window sticker or call your dealership and ask them. If you did purchase your ML55 supercharged from Mercedes, congrats, becasue it's the only one in the world. Who's the idiot?

Apricotscrub,
It's easy to get confused with all the different variations of the AMG engine. It's still a great truck though. It would be awesome if Mercedes added the supercharged 55 to the ML. Until then, there are companies like Kleemann that will build you the vehicle that Mercedes should have.

JME,

Did you not hear the news that they do have a Kompressor ML55! Yes, it is built on the same assembly line as the C55 Sport Coupe! HAHAHA!!! Only joking, but MercedeSChink must be pretty gullable if the salesman sold him on the truck being supercharged!!!

I went here in Atlanta. They pitted the ML 55 against the LX 470, 4.4 Range and Caddy. It is way smaller than the others, the ML55 is kinda in it's own niche with the 4.6 X-5. People don't really cross-shop a ML 55

apology

Wait, does that mean that the 347 hp from the ml55 engine is naturally aspirated? If so, wow!!! I can fit a turbo charger or supercharger in it then right?! On a side note, i really do apologize, cause as ap said before, i am confused with the other amg's.

MercedeSChink,
I have a G55 that started life with the same naturally aspirated engine as you have in your ML55. I sent the G55 to Kleemann in Colorado Springs and they added their supercharger system, did some exhaust work, and reprogrammed the ECU. The G is now pushing 600+ HP at sea level. Car and Driver recently tested my truck in Detroit and it will appear in their September issue. 0-60 comes in less than 5 seconds and it out accelerates the Cayenne Twin Turbo. Not too bad for 5800LBS. What's amazing about the Kleemann package is how liveable it is in day to day driving situations, you'd think it was stock until you punch it. The ML55 with the same mods is even quicker since it doesn't weigh quite as much. If you have any questions feel free to send me an E-Mail.

They were not supercharged. They were bore and storked to 349hp. Incresed from 5.0 to 5.5 liters. The last E55 shared this engine.

The new generations of AMG, SL, E, S and CL have the supercharged versions.

Well, that just sounds too good to be true, and too expensive for me! Just wondering how much it costed you and what can i possibly do since i live in Toronto, Canada? I was planning to use only around a grand this summer for my car, but if you propose to me a good idea at a good cost, i'll probably see into it and ask for it for my birthday.

I had to jump in, First of all, that G 55 must be just AWESOME! I have a 2k ML 55. It is actually 342 hp/376 torque stock. The last version E55 for some reason has a few more ponies at 347 or 349. So far, this is the only AMG version that would be getting a whole new engine (reference to 6.3L possibility at only 400 hp). I have heard that the same "new" E55 Kompressor at about 469 hp will be shared with the new ML in a few years. Who knows for sure, I just want to see it spank the Cayenne

It does have a distinctive engine "whine" like a porsche almost. It is normal, not sure exactly why it sounds like that but AMG engines whine a little, maybe cuz they never get to open up!

Some of the ML55's have a very different sound "whine" to them, almost sounds like a jet or a turbo charger, but I beleive it is the higher compression ratio of the engine that causes this. It is very cool sounding though. Autogunner.

I also was at the event. It was awful, too long waiting in a line to drive a car, so I drove only topless. MB event was much better.

From the cars listed on your sig. you would have to be quite successful, and you can't afford a "Super Charger?" "you only have a spare grand to spend this summer???" Your writing skills look extremely remedial you can't spell, or capitalize correctly. Quote("how much it costed you?)... ...Know wonder you were cofused about having a super charger, you need to own an ML55 oh wait I figured it out your parents and friends own these cars POSER....

I just wanted to add that even though my ML430 isn't an AMG, it still has a certain "whine" to the engine. maybe its a V-8 thing?

it is 5.5 (5.4) natural aspirated engine , dont think that anything that says 55 is supercharged!

I owned a 2002 ML55 AMG. I recall 342HP w/ 376 ft-lbs TQ MAX. It was normally aspirated as it always has been since 2000. Anyways, I believe that the 347HP is the CAnadian/European std of HP , eg. not SAE rated, which comes in a bit less. Just like the SL65 is rated 604HP in the USA and 612HP under the DIN std. in other countries. I hope that clears up the confusion.

BTW, I don't recall a supercharger whine per se as I have in the SL55. It's pretty distinctive between N.A. vs. Supercharged. Now, if Mercedes had offered
a Kompressor V-8 with 476/493HP+, damn that would be a nice 2005 upgrade/infusion of appeal/last hurrah for an outgoing model generation.
