Is 2000 ML55 and 2003 ML55 Hitch the same?

Hi,

I am looking to add a towing hitch to my 2003 ML55. I have located a OEM hitch from a 2000 ML55, but I am not sure it will fit the 2003. Anybody know?

Thanks

K

If the body style is a w163 for 2003 then it should bolt right up. When i had my ML55 I bought a draw-tight hitch for mine (available only for ml500,430,320) and it bolt right up. You should have pre-drilled holes already on your bumper re-enforcement for the bolts. But just on your own to make certain.
Also when removing your rear bumper be careful of the cellular antenna cable (if you have one). I almost ripped mine off.

Well, I guess I'll find out. I bought an oem hitch off an 2000 ml55, but haven't done the install yet. Thanks for the cable heads up.

The OEM hitch is the same P/N for all four years of ML55's.

Thanks, this was exactly what I was looking for.

In the meantime I received the hitch, and it looks as if the holes line up perfectly. Just need to get replacement bolts and washers now.

I also wish I had the OEM harness as well, oh well......

You can get bolts, washers, and locktite at Ace hardware. I have an extra factory harness in my storage shed... somewhere. Don't forget to add the 20 amp fuse in the engine bay for the hitch wiring too, or else the trailer lights won't work. I got the harness in 2007 from a dealership in Orange County Ca. If you go to the dealer they can do a nationwide dealer search for that part and hopefully get a hit.

Since you then plugged in your OEM harness, where did you find the pigtail? I assume you did not have to remove spare tire etc. and access from inside the trunk, but rather through the vent after bumper was off??

you wanna sell your extra harness (or is it completely lost)?

There is an oval grommet on the left side that the harness must go through. The pigtail is inside, behind the plastic, which is behind the spare. Since I taken the spare out years ago, it was easy to remove the left panel anyway. While I had the left side off, I tapped into the left rear fog light and ran a wire over to the right so I have two rear fogs too. A red light hitch plug with a blue dot looks good while you are not towing too. It plugs into the pigtail connector with a round nine to a flat four connect adapter. I mounted the pigtail plug underneath by the rear muffler and cut the painted piece with a dremel so it fits tightly around the square receiver. I can post some pics if you want.

Not to go too far OT, but you are only supposed to have 1 rear foglight. It is so other vehicles behind can see you in bad weather conditions. Two fog lights confuse the following vehicle into thinking you have brake lights on.

Jerry

Although I like symmetry, I was thinking the same thing.... No reason to confuse anyone in bad weather.
