Other vehicles I was seriously considering/ drove - New RR & Sport Supercharged. Cayenne Turbo & S. Initially I thought we were getting the CTT, Im a big Porsche fan, but then (at a MB dealer on the floor)we saw a diamond white ML63 w/ the 21"s & Red Brake calipers! Sat inside and was amazed at the interior, the look, the quality and how comfortable it is. Grabbed the alcantara wheel, man! Afterwards at the Porsche dealer driving the CTT felt more like just a tall car, room is very tight compared to the ML63. Rear seats are small & tight as is cargo. Ive driven Cayennes before, sometimes Ill get an S as a loaner but never realized how small it is, more of a mid-small size ute. The ML63 under represents itself in pictures, it's much more impressive in person and especially once drivin, oh the sound! I then considered a GL63 but they're identical in space to the ML63 in the first 2 rows, dash is identical, front seats identical, mats are even interchangeable, cargo rear width is identical, the Gl is just longer, taller & heavier. So the GL didn't make sense to me as an AMG, you lose a lot of the sportiness and acceleration/ speed to gain a 3rd row and cargo capacity that I would probably never need, it feels like the fastest bus ever.

Back to the ML63 - I gave the pano much thoughts, drove my dealer crazy wanting to drive pano roof cars on different days. I like the way the SUV looks from the outside with the pano, although the vehicle is higher than a car so you don't see it as much. What I could not get passed was how flimsy the shades are on the pano. The car I borrowed had water on the glass and this reflected on the flimsy shades which made them appear stained. But biggest reason I didnt order the pano - In my SUV I absolutely hate heat & light coming into the cabin from the roof on a summer day, especially after the SUV has been in the sun all day & without being able to vent the pano like you can the sunroof, it would be worse. If Im in a convertible I want the sun but if I want to de-crompress after a long day or hot day last thing Id want is distracting sun light/reflections hitting my face/top of my head coming into the cabin from the pano. Give me a dark cabin, sunglasses and I'm able to relax & concentrate on driving... .....Also - The pano adds weight in the worst place (not a big deal probably on a heavy suv) but sure it doesnt help either, plus added noise and potential creaking noises down the road. To say nothing of the added safety risks possibly... Also coming from sports cars, I have always loved the way the dinamica/alcantara headliner looks & think having the pano takes away from this because you don't get the nicer headliner in the 2 large glass areas.

Anyway, obviously my mind is pretty made up about the pano but if anyone has any ideas, comments?

I almost took off the night assist after reading about it here but kept it for personal reasons. I also Think it can be useful between my wife & I when we do trips together ,,, to whomever is co-piloting.

Do you guys wait for scheduled service or change oil early? For synthetic cars I change oil after 2-3k miles, then go on the recommended intervals.

Nice forum. Thanks in advance for any comments. I'm going a little nuts waiting, really believe I must have already read or watched every single review and seen every picture on the net of the vehicle. 'The waiting is the hardest part'

Congrats Sir!!

You won't be dissapointed such an incredible machine but the wait is terrible... And once its here you need to make 1'000 before you can floor it lol. I strongly recommend you an oil change after this...

Make sure you go the amg driving accademy with your amg pp its so worth it

Thank you! 1000 miles for break-in & then change oil, okay got it!

Not sure but thought I read somewhere about keeping it in "comfort" during break-in, is that right or no????? If so why?

There is a warning sticker that comes with the car stating to keep the RPMs and speed below a certain limit for the 1st 1000 miles. Nothing about keeping it in comfort mode, but putting it in sport mode makes it too easy to go over the rev limit.

Took delivery a month ago, past the 1000 mile mark now & absolutely loving this vehicle.

Favorite functional parts - 1) Engine power delivery & air suspension. 2) Handling, responsiveness in "Sport" for an SUV. 3) Engine/exhaust sound. 4) Performance Steering wheel. 5) Switch & enlarge in Nav screen from the different cameras (front, rear, side mirrors) The side mirrors cameras show both to the front or back, along the side of the vehicle , great for parking near curbs, etc. Surround view is very helpful for navigating tight parking spots, actually wish I had this on my Ferrari where it is very difficult to see in tight spots. 6) Blind spot assist.

Favorite cosmetic parts/options- 1) Alcantara Headliner (which I didn't realize goes all the way back into the cargo area around the side cargo widows. 2) The 21" wheels. 3) Diamond White Metallic paint. 4) Interior is terrific from the quality of leather, the stitching, dash, lighting, etc. just freakin nice.. 5) The front of the vehicle is my favorite exterior design/body element & think the Diamond White paint shows the bumper contours best but especially contrasts with the black mesh/radiator openings.

I was pleasantly surprised by how functional the soft close doors are. More than anything it prevents that annoying thing that happens when a passenger leaves the vehicle & doesn't shut the door hard enough & you have to get out to shut it.. Otherwise you don't even notice the option, close the door normally & the doors shut all the way, close the door too softly & they pull the door closed.. They work seamlessly, first 2 drives I forgot I had them optioned at first.

Wifes favorite option - Heated Massage. She also feels confident w/ the vehicle/ good visibility.

What I'd like to change - Seating position is really excellent. Adjustable side bolsters are great too but wish there was slightly more tilt (down) to the rear of the seat bottom, it's too flat front to back even adjusted all the way down. I like the feel of sitting in more of a pocket especially when driving aggressive.

Cool thing to show to friends is how the vehicle/air suspension squats when locked.

Who changed oil early? If so did you change just the engine oil, or what else??? MB doesn't use different break-in oil from the factory, right?

Thanks for the posters that helped me out, answering questions prior to my order.

Some pics (apologize for the camera phone quality)

Winter wheels/tires :Amazing how different the 21's are in Sport vs 20"s in Comfort.

Thanks!
The cup holders are heated (glows red) and cooled (glows blue), controlled by a button next to the drivers side cup holder. It was Standard equipment on my vehicle/2014.

A dusting of snow in New York today. Can report the new Pirelli Scorpion "Winter" tires are performing above my expectations so far for wet, dry handing, slush & very light snow. I spent a few minutes before my commute (30 miles) in an empty parking lot & back streets testing the tires limits in the light snow, accelerating & braking hard. The tires grip incredibly well working with the trucks systems. Also impressed with the tires ability to shred water/puddles without hydroplaning at highway speeds. So far on dry pavement (temps from 20F-40's) they handle better than any winter tire I've experienced.

They're quiet for a winter tire too, unless you are driving along a concrete barrier on drivers side there's no perceptible tire noise/difference vs. the 21" 3 season Conti's..... The 21's AMG wheels & 295 tires do look better though & handle better in spring-fall temps.

Main reason for switching to winter tires is what happens to summer tire compounds in below freezing temps, even on dry pavement..... 20" wheels w/ low profile tires aren't meant for deep snow but pretty confident they're going to be what I need for mostly plowed roads, packed snow & eventually a few inches of white stuff.

Wow, what a cool ML63! I posted some pictures of my wife’s new ride on the main W166 thread too.

Would you mind taking a picture of your car’s engine, specifically its top cover? I also got the Performance Package and expected to see a true carbon fiber engine cover as advertised. Instead, I have something that looks like plastic cover though. You can see it from my pictures. Your photo will help me figure out what I might be missing – is it an overlooked quality issue at the factory, or is it me not having the right amount of expertise in different styles of carbon fiber.

Thanks a bunch in advance.

EVOII_Racer,

Thank for the picture, buddy! I will need a couple of more, preferably from a 2014 build before I go back and get the dealership to sort this out somehow.

Are you saying you got the Performance Pack without the red calipers?

Mb doesn't require an oil change but both my salesman and my tuner strongly recommanded an oil change so i did one
