ML55 Winter Wheels, 17"
I recently purchased a 2001 ML55, and am looking for 17" wheels for winter tires.
I would be interested in hearing from anyone that knows of a 17" wheel that will fit over the large OEM brakes on the ML55. The ML55 comes with 18" wheels, but the owner's manual suggests a 17" wheel for the ML55 for winter use.
Every local tire/wheel dealer says they have the wheel, but none of them fit over the brakes. I have been looking for 2 weeks.
The local MB dealer offers 17" wheels for the ML55 for winter use, but they are priced out-of-sight.
I am looking for a wheel in the $150-175 range, that will fit on the vehicle.
Cost is more important than appearance, as they will only be on the vehcile for a few days at a time (we do not get much snow in Portland Oregon).

We have the same problem in here in Europe. The 17" wheels do not fit on the axles because of the OEM calipers. Even local MB dealers are not able to organise some rims. The "only" solution is to get some 18 inch rims and use 255/60 Winter tyres. Does not look that great - I have to assume, but for Winter use - it is perfect. (even it is not approved by MB-France).

17" wheels,
2000-2001 ML430 17" OEM rims will fit over your brakes. That is what i'm using for the winter with a set of winter Dueler's. The brakes on the 430's are the same as the one on the ML55's from MY 2000 on up. Red on the 55 and grey on the 430's.

playing in a winter wonderland
I got a set of Moda R3(maybe R4s) 17X8 wheels and tires from Tirerack.com for winter. I only paid about 125-150 a wheel. They fit on the 55 just fine, this is my second winter with them on the car. I would call tire rack and see what they have. My whole package came to about 1100. I purchased a set of 430 wheels off ebay and they didnt fit. So now I have a set of ML430 wheels and im out 300bucks 
If you want a picture of the wheel let me know and ill post one... its a 10spoke wheel, not bad for a winter wheel.

sure, Ill get them up asap, I was told they look like the SL55 wheels. Never thought about it but i suppose they do. Not bad I guess for a winter wheel...

55 17" tires
Tell you what 250 bucks and there yours, I got them for 300 and then another 150 or something for the shipping. They are the 16" 5 spoke wheel, there is tires still mounted to them although if you want me to I can order some snow tires or something for ya from my dad and give the tire to you for our cost

Those are the AMG Brake Calipers... I would assume a full brake upgrade would get you them... An easier way would be to take them off and paint them Yourself... probably a lot cheaper to do also...
