Brakes

I recently purchase a 2014 ML63 which had new rotors/pads on all 4 wheels (Zimmerman parts I think). Looking at the history of this, they were replaced several times up to this point (75k miles). The stock system is a monster, the stopping power is pretty good.

Couple questions:
  • are wrapped rotors an issue with this platform? I know it depends on several things, but it seems they have already warped a bit after only a couple thousand miles.
  • What parts is everyone using as replacements? I see not a lot of availability from makers like Brembo, EBC, etc. .
Thanks for any input.

Hi Mike,
My ML has 55K miles and all pads were changed twice. Rotors are still the original with no signs of warping. I haven't heard anyone with warped rotors either. I drive pretty aggressive too. Maybe you got some cheap rotors?

I guess it's possible, but I don't see a multitude of options for replacements. The history of this vehicle suggests the replacements didn't last too long.

Mcamp, I have exact same car, rear brakes will wear much faster since they are applied when cruise control is slowing car down to maintain set speed, also if you hold brake pedal hard when at red light....the pads will drag at start and the slots on the rotors eats them alive.!,, if you can get the dealer to delete the hill roll back brake hold, this will make them last a bit longer.
Ive just changed to Brembo pads (ceramic) and Zimmerman rotors, 1/3 of price compared to MB dealer, no dust, no noise so far and plenty of brake capacity, even in rainy days.
Cheers

I just received mine from Amazon for $398. I will replace them in a month and post an update. My wife got 15K on Zimmerman Disks and OEM Pads after 2 years of driving. Hopefully i can get an extra year and 22K out of these.

I just installed the R1 eLine Black Series that i got for $398 from amazon. It replaced Zimmermann rotors with Brembo OEM pads after only 15K. Stopping power is within 5% of the OEM Rotors/pads that the car came with and to the Zimmermann / OEM Brembo pads combo that it replaced. OEM rotors were replaced at 50K and they did vibrate ( wrapped ). Zimmermann were wrapped after only 15K but i think the Brembo OEM pads have something to do with it as well. Now with the ceramic brake pads i will finally have less dust and this MB ML63 being my wife daily driver it is perfect for her.

Which axel? Front, rear or both?

I know that rear genuine Mercedes OEM pads are made by Textar. So I assume you are referring to front rotors/pad, since as I recall Mercedes OEM front pads are made by Brembo. 50K miles on front OEM rotors was remarkable. How many times did you change front pads while still on original front rotors for 50K miles?

Both front and rear rotors were replaced by the dealer according to the records of the previous owner / dealership. They were replaced at 30K according to the dealer records so my bad on the 50K statement. I bought the car used with 39K and replace the rotors/pads at 50K with Zimmermann / Brembo pads ( rear pads were replaced at 39K before i bought the car).At 65K i replace them with this latest Package from R1 concepts. In spite of that front pads had another 4K life and rear pads had another 2k on them i did not want to risk it as we are planning a trip. All 4 corners were replaced at the same time. If the rears are made by Texar than that is what i bought under OEM pads i guess at 50K. My wife commute is 3 miles each way so no heavy breaking points. For our style of driving
we can get 17K on the pads and at this price point getting the rotors is a no brainer for me.

I wish I had seen this thread sooner. I am replacing brake pads and rotors this weekend. I saw the R1s at Amazon but only one review and the price so low scared me away. Had I seen this thread I would have saved some money.
