Questions about open pore wood
I don't have it in the ML (Anthracite Poplar), but do have open pore wood trim on my Volvo XC70. I've had that car for 4 years, and no issues with maintenance or durability in that car.
From what I've seen of the Brown Satin Ash, Benz has a more of a fine finish look to it. The Volvo's is very "open pore".
I love that look, and shows little to no smudging from fingers, etc. Wish I had it on the ML too.

Yep, like rayuelo said, the Brown Satin Ash (BSA) is open pore. I'm ordering it for my MY13 ML550. When I first saw it, I didn't like it so much...I thought it made the cabin look kinda dull. But the shinny and rich Burl Wood made the cabin look brighter and more like a luxury car should. However, when I saw the BSA in an ML with a wrapped dash, I suddenly really liked it far over anything else.
I was lucky to find a local dealer who had it for me to looks at, since BSA is a special order item.
But when I saw it, I suddenly realized how well the MB-tex wrapped dash and the Brown Satin Ash go well together to create a luxurious look that looks more special than the shinny Burl or other wood trim. That actually, in comparison, the shinny wood makes the cabin look cheaper because it can look kinda 'plastically' or fake with that thick veneer of plastic coat. Whereas, the 'organic' or leather-like look of the wrapped dash with that beautiful stitching complements the natural look and feel in the BSA. And it looks undoubtedly like real wood.
I saw an ML63 with real leather covering the dash and the BSA trim and it was even more gorgeous. This convinced me to cough up another $3K to order the designo interior, which is offered for the first time in MY13 MLs that are not AMG.
On the other hand, like I said, I think an unwrapped dash makes the cabin look a little duller, so the shinny wood trims can give it a little class if you're not ordering the wrapped dash.
But bottom line, if you are ordering the BSA trim, order the $300 wrapped dash along with it. And if you're getting an ML550, it comes standard.
The AMG website actually has one of the best ways to compare trims with the wrapped dash: http://www.mbusa.com/amg/build/#/mod...tion-interior/
Below are some great closeup photos of the wrapped dash with the BSA trim. Ignore that brown seat covering...that hatch pattern is only available in European models. In real life, the brown leather dash in the US I don't think matches the BSA very well, since the brown leather wrapped dash has a red-ish tint, but you can get that only in the ML63. The wrapped dashed in other MLs with Brown/Black leather is black MT-tex. The Black or Beige/Black leather seats (or designo Porcelain) match best to BSA.

FYI there is a 2 week line shutdown first of July that should help the supply line catch up.
