Well, it's fixed now and sounding so much better on start up. My dealer knew about the service bulliten and fixed it without batting an eye...whew!
Had couple of other minor issues addressed as well, now she's tip top.
Thanks for your help guys!

So this does not apply to diesel 350 bluetech engines? Correct? Thanks

Get if fixed if it's under warranty, otherwise it can still be fixed but you'll have to pay for it I guess. MB should actually fix it out of warranty for free though. It seems a pretty common issue with alot of their engines.

I believe there are some Bluetecs affected by this. Spend the 5-10 minutes and read back through this thread and maybe contact one of the members who has a Bluetec. Cheers

Thank you I have the same issue. I am going to take my ML to the dealrship. What is the ramification to the engine if it is not repaired quickly? I just dont want to damage the engine. Thanks

Bad Piston----I took my 2012 ML 350 to the dealership for this repair. They agreed to repair it because I took the above PDF file with me. It has been in the shop for a 2 weeks due to parts not being ordered. They just call me stating they need to order more parts due to a bad Piston as well. they took the engine out now and ordering more parts. Does anybody heard of a bad piston due to this issue?

yes...there are 2 technical bulletins, one referring to the chain tensioners losing oil pressure when the engine is off. the second is some of the engines have a bad wrist pin for the piston causing a muffled "knock" sound.

mb Techman- Thank you for your reply. The truck still in the shop since Jan 2nd. Is there a way you can share the second bulletin. I am curious why it is taking so long for the reapir. Since they took the Engine apart do you think there are ramification from the repair side or this is a normal. Should I start looking into replacing my truck or this is not a big deal. I am affraid when the engine opened there will be more issue in the future. You recommendation or the community are welcomed.

Engine tensioner oil pressure - ticking noise on warm start up

Does anybody still have the service bulletin for the chain tensioners losing oil pressure when the engine is off? I want to pass to service dept when I bring in the ML. Thanks for your help.

Yes, look at my post from 1 Nov '14 earlier in this tread and you'll find it there. Good luck!

I am bringing up this not so old thread. Is the startup noise affect 14-15 ML350 and 14-15 GLK350? I think I have the noise but or maybe not as I know DI engines sounds a little louder than the old V6s. I am not paying too much attention about it as the two SUVs are being driven by the wife and she is deaf on any car noise.

My car is in the shop right(2013 GLK350) now for 3 days now (MB Foothill Ranch). I didn't show anything to them but it seems like they know about it since they replaced the tensioner for the secondary chain. Car is also in for fluctuating RPM needle on idle.

S550, SRX, ML550
Just to add - I got my ML550 startup noise fixed really easily by the dealer because of this thread, my noises started when the car was still new, probably around 500 miles or so.

I took a video of it starting up (one could clearly hear the metallic chattering for a few seconds), and gave them the service bulletin number as well. Service advisor was happy to get all the details and pass them on to the techs who worked on my car.

Took two days (had to order parts) but haven't heard any noises since.

So thanks to all who posted the info!

engine start make a funny noise

There is nothing to worrie about it.
when you turn the engine off the oil will go all at the bottom of the engine leaving the upper part of the chain inside the engine dry. When you start your engine It takes exactly 2-3 seconds for the chain to be lubrificated all again and assume regular work.
hope this was helpful.

Rehashing an old thread, but the file from MB Techman references a second file named "assembling of check valve.pdf," can anyone post this file if they have it available?

Thanks, John

So my 2013 GLK350 with the V6 M276 engine had this sound when I got it. Just as I was getting around to fixing it, the noise disappeared. hmmmmm......

I didn't read through this entire thread, the OP was years ago, but, if it helps, this sure sounds like the timing chain tensioner issue I just had resolved under warranty.

For those out of warranty, how much does the dealer charge for the fix?

^ Anyone? How much are the repairs? Sounds like they are raking off intake manifold to get to the covers, this is a lot of billable hours.

If you read the posts in this thread, you will come to the conclusion that you'll need to replace the cam chain tensioners and more importantly, have check valves installed on the circuits feeding the tensioners. These tensioners are hydraulically-operated. When the engine is shut off, the circuits lose pressure. It takes a few seconds after re-starting the engine before the tensioners pump up again, hence the clatter.
