MY TRUNK IS GOING UNDER

MB service department tried to remove the rear spoiler on my new S560. As you can see in the attached photos this didn't work out too well, which was very surprising to me considering most people here on the forum seemed to think that fishing line, a heat gun and some Goo Gone would do the trick. Maybe MB should have tried that first! Just kidding. I am sure they did a very professional job, but these results were the unexpected consequences of these efforts.

They are covering whatever must be done in order to make this right. My concern is: What will make it right?! Does it look like paint damage or a layer of glue that needs to come off? More importantly, if they repaint this section of the trunk won't it be very obvious? Perhaps I should insist on them removing the trunk and spraying it totally. But then do you know where my mind goes (and probably with good reason)? I worry that the silver letters won't be affixed correctly and the REST OF MY TRUNK will never look the same.

What do you think the best way to go about this is? I am dropping off the car on Wednesday, and gone are the times when I used to be able to say, "Mercedes knows best!"

the color difference ? is it rough ? does that color difference appear to be under the clearcoat ?

It’s definitely not rough to the touch. It appears to be under the clear-coat

Is the dis-coloration completely under the spoiler ? aka hiding it ?

Yes. It was the direct result of removing the spoiler.

ok this is starting to make sense.... looks like the clearcoat had a chemical reaction with the adhesive... and/or the clear was not totally gassed out before they stuck the spoiler on... This may turn into a TSB to not remove a spoiler and/or the spoiler may become a dealer added option, so that the clear can gas before the use of the adhesive...

I'd put the spoiler back on- it would cover the marks and makes the car look much better.

Well, it’s going in for painting... or something! They know I don’t want it looking like that and are committed to fixing it.

Regarding the spoiler itself, I’m just not a fan of the look personally. I know some appreciate it.. but I went through a lot to get this thing removed against everybody’s will.

+1 to this

I bet the spoiler is put on shortly after the car is painted thus not allowing any potential remaining solvents/reducers to off gas and or react with the adhesive.

Similar to the concept of painters telling you to not wax your car for 30 days.

Looks like an offgassing issue. Either that or they delaminated some of the clear when they were yanking the spoiler off. Either way they will probably just reshoot the top of the boot. Should look factory when they are done.

Lowering the car, oversized wheels and tyres, wings, extra chrome, I despise these trends with the power of a supernova.

You do one, you’re forever a zero in my book.
Until maybe you change and correct your stupidity in the future.

Get a Japanese trash or an Italian sports car if you want to go full bottom feeder after applying these trends.

I’m not into those types of things unless you consisted 20 inch AMG rims in that realm (I don’t; the W222 benefits from the balanced look of that extra inch).

Regarding the spoiler, when I got my first S class (W221, 2013) a spoiler was an absolute rarity. I can actually count on one hand how many W221s I’ve seen with spoiler. It just didn’t go with the vehicle at all. I believe the same is still true with the W222, yet I see constant spoilers. In my epic search to locate this new car I was fending off spoilers like nobody’s business. They’re everywhere!

and no offense to anyone who has one on their s class.. for my money, personally, I think it’s more of a luxury saloon than a sports car. So why put a sports feature? It would be like including a giant reclining back seat in the cabin of a Lamborghini. Don’t make a car what it isn’t naturally; what the customers expect.

about repainting......... hhhhhhhhmmmmmmmm........ might demand they take it back to the primer ? and not just scuff and paint ?

Any professional painters in here ? I used to airbrush graphics so have some knowledge but not as much as someone who base coated all the time...

OP hundolot, might post this as a painting issue... to get some painters opinions...
