Can anyone explain the pre-owned 911 market

Hello all,
I have been in the market for a 911 for a few years now and are seeing prices getting out of hand: 993, 996, 997, 991s even for what would be considered basic, entry level, and low spec......NA(non GT3), auto, non-Metzger, etc. Nobody wanted these for years and they were in the classified for <$50k all day, some dipping into the teens. I believe prices are being artificially pumped by a network of influencers and dealers who have much to gain from this. I've read a few years ago that Marshall Goldman (as an example) was out there buying/hoarding all the 996 and 997 turbos they could find, which puts them in a position to dictate prices. The formerly unloved 996 is now loved. The formerly undesirable 997 turbo with a non-PDK slushbox is selling for double. 993 Carreras are $250k+ cars now. Non-Metzger 991s are $100k. New base 911's are a $200k proposition. The pre-owned market is now primed for speculators and collectors, not enthusiasts. I guess you can call this a rant.

Just dont let your 911 idle in your drive way or it will "wash" the cylinders and cause scoring ;-)

It's the way it is.

The reason is people have money and want to buy a 911. There will always be more money in the world and there will always be more people in the world. The pool of cash and buyers is always growing.

No more pre-owned 911s are being made. Pre-owned 911s are becoming fewer and fewer as some are, sadly, crashed and totaled over time. The supply of pre-owned 911s is shrinking.

Demand and ability to pay, growing. Supply, shrinking. What happens to price?

Go to rennlist and read threads for a week. If you have any further questions, post a thread there.

I do not know anyone who did not have the 911 as their "real" dream car. Sure, as kids for my generation it was Lambo and some others...but they were not (and are not) "real" cars. My 911 Turbo S I drove all year (including in Chicacgo winters) and that car was always rock solid....hands down my 997 was FAR more reliable than any of my AMG's have ever been....now that my generation (right at 50) have more money - many are going out and getting that 911 then wanted when they were 25.....

Ahhhh...someone who has never driven one. Also, if you drive a Miata tell everyone its your wifes (and KNOCK THAT SMILE OFF OF YOUR FACE!!!!). There is a reason the Miata is the #1 race car on the planet (by ownership numbers).

I owned a gen 1 Miata as a daily and it was tons of fun. Two small kids and a two seater were not the best combination so we went to an F-250 Super Duty 6.0 Powerstroke crew cab!

@MB V-8 I agree with your assessment, a common comparison I have is a low mileage W205 C63 S Coupe with bucket seats costs the same as a similar mileage, 997.1 911 Carrera S or 997.2 Base.. The performance is so much greater on the Mercedes, my Porsche search would always just bring me back to how much more bang for your buck you can get in AMG land.

I think this is also a function of the general direction new cars are going. I myself am less and less interested in what's coming out from the factories. Electrification, endless weight gain, Teslafication of the interiors and generally shrinking quality and the cheapening of materials all the while new car prices are at an all time high. AMG now just released an EV with fake V8 sound and simulated transmission and has anybody seen the Ferrari Luce? $660k for a Ferrari that looks like a 360 crashed into the back of a Prius. I mean even if you have tons of money to waste, the Luce will likely depreciate like a rock as other performance EVs have done. So would you rather spend $660k on a Luce or similar, then lose 50% in depreciation or spend that money on a classic that holds its value or actually appreciates?

On top of that comes the arrogance of Porsche. You can't get an allocation on a new GT3 etc. unless you first buy a bunch of Cayenne and Macans. Ferrari will probably force people to buy the Luce before they get to buy what they really want. Also, Porsche isn't doing well at the moment, so things are catching up with them. Not sure I'd wanna buy a new product from a company that's struggling financially. You just know they had to cut cost somewhere.

Interesting miata is mentioned but I seen a few forum members here with one and they enjoy it along with their 63 AMGs, turns out they sometimes like to drive slow and find it fun, the saying perhaps is true: Fun to drive a slow car fast than a fast car slow.
Fair to say every vehicle exists for a purpose.

Don't know much about the 911 market, but the 944's are also going bonkers, different scale though. When I sold mine 15-ish years ago, I had to lower the price to get a buyer. $3500 down to $2800. Finding a 944 in a similar condition as mine will now run $12k+ minimum. Craziness!

Is there really no car that comes close to a 911 without the porsche tax? I understand the C192 AMG GT 63 is on the heavier side even though it tried to be a 911 competitor. You gain the weight but you also gain the V8 with the AMG.

The cars that pull the big money are always the low mileage cars. People pay A LOT extra for low mileage. Some Ferraris that have doubled in the last year are those that are very limited production cars like those with manual transmission when automatics were offered and chosen by 90% of the buyers when new. At the end of the series of a car like in the fifth year Ferrari will have these limited edition cars which have a bit more power and a bit less weight. They are about 10% of that entire series and they are like factory Modified, Challenge Stradale or Scuderia and that rarity makes them desirable and they have really taken off. With 911's the cabriolets are the cheapest and the the five speed automatics from Benz are a LOT cheaper than the PDK. If you want value look for a 911 turbo cab with tip and most people don't want that and they are a good value. Any of the garden variety Ferraris with an auto are where the value is but if you look clearly at how many were made that can give you an idea where the big money is heading. Many of these cars are purchased and aren't driven. So they will be nice and fresh for the owner who buys it from you but why not drive it like you stole it and enjoy the car whatever it is.
