Huh? I don't get it? I'm not even sure if I'm supposed to be offended... if I was misunderstood, what I am contemplating doing to my engine is removing it, using the MKB and Kleemann parts on a bigger engine that will hopefully push out over 650 hp and 630 lb/ft torque (I'm not even sure what the final numbers will be)... I'll have a stock 430 engine left over.

Now you're talking, forget the Modena and do the CLK!! You'll end up with a car that might not get as many looks as the Modena, but should be able to match or better it in handling and destroy it performance wise.

Your dreaming if you think a CLK will ever handle as well as a Modena...no matter how much you spend on it....that is unless it is a CLK-GTR...

Yes I am dreaming, of fully adjustable coilover suspension, adjustable rollbars, etc. Realistically the car probably weighs about the same as a 550, so there is no reason that it should not be able to outhandle that. Put it on a diet to get it around the 3000lb mark and besting the Modena is far from being out of the question.
All comes down to suspension geometry etc. Any prod based race car starts life as basically prod car. Do not confuse stock car attributes with what you can do with REAL modifications.

Yeah you can do anything if you throw enough money at it...I love the CLK...have owned two of them...I looked seriously into building a CLK based race car and decided there was too much to do to it to make it worth while...my opinion. I think the biggest issues are: steering...chassis stiffness...and weight distribution after you strip the car...You would have to do ALOT of expensive reegineering of the chassis to get it to handle as well as a 360 Modena...I think it would be cheaper to pick up a second hand DTM car....ther has been some talk that MB may even release a w209 CLK for FIA homologation...a much better platform for such a project.

I'm not a CLK fan, but enjoy modifying cars. I shouldn't think it would be that expensive, similar mods to an early model Porsche are only about 5K. I had a fully adjustable set of coilovers and bars in my '94 Turbo for $3500US (friend is sales manager at Bilstein distributor). Depends if you send it to someone like Renntech etc who I am sure would do a fantastic job, or a company that builds (and fabricates) race suspensions which, I would hazard a guess, would be about 1/4 of the price one of the specialist tuners would charge. I have found from experience that price and quality are not directly related when it comes to car mods. Give me a budget of 10K, 20-25K if you are going to pay retail to do the job.

Yeah it is fun to modify cars...but as I say above...you would have to do alot more than adjustable coil overs to get Modena equivalent performance out of a w208....fact of life
