Thumbs down R is the b a s t a r d son of new ML and Chrysler Pacifica

Born b a s t a r d then given a daily beating with the Ugly Stick.

At least that's what I thought when I first saw one in person tonight as a promo at a Rolling Stones concert.

I was just looking at the R yesterday as a possible replacement for the Volvo XC in 2 years when my lease ends on it. Even though the dealer insists its not related, and even though it's RWD and not FWD... It's way to similar to the Pacifica.. If MB is indeed borrowing parts from Chrysler.. the Alabama MB's are going to be strong candidates for this horrid practice.

I know that R has NO common parts with Pacifica.

IF common parts were used, then it would be the INBRED, b a s t a r d son.

It's actually AWD. And no chrysler parts are shared with ANY MB. Chrysler uses some MB parts but not the other way around. So tired of this PAcifica, and chrysler parts talk.

All of you need to get your ****ing facts straight and take your heads out of your asses over this whole borrowing parts ****.

The R does not have anything in common with the Pacifica or ML.

1. Pacifica has its own chasis
2. R has its own chasis to be shared with the new G
3. ML has its own chasis
4. Engines are shared between ML and R along with transmissions and drivetrain.
5. Pacifica has its own engines and drivetrain.

The only Chryslers to use old MB parts are:

1. Dodge Magnum, Chrysler 300 (W210 chasis).
2. The 300C and Magnum Hemi have the same 5spd from the W210.
3. Crossfire runs on the old SLK chasis, not the new.

So we have come to the conclusion that Mercedes is NOT using Chrylser parts.

I knew it all along, and I've been saying it all along... just making the point that the R looks like a Pacifica.. that's all.

Anyway.. is it AWD (front bias) or AWD 50/50?

Easy CE750, you will lose your credibility if you post many like that.

It is 50/50 AWD BTW.

I recall you said the quality wasn't impressing you much... what did you think about the door panels? I looked at a $67,000 sticker R, and I don't know if it's just that the other crap like the Ford/Lincoln SUV's are getting a lot better, or what, but it didn't feel very MB like, felt like a Ford door.. I think (IMHO) you did much (MUCH) better with the S.

No CE...never talked about the quality in negative terms. I felt the doors were solid and did not have that 70/80s' "thunk" but none do any more. I found nothing wrong with the quality (except for the sun visors) in the more than 5 that I looked at and the one I drove. I think it is a good quality Mercedes Benz but I realized I did not need all those features of the SUV/Wagon and another sedan was my best choice. I would have been happy with the R500 I had ordered had I completed the purchase based on my seeing and driving the car.

I see you have a .mac

Good choice.. Mac is always a mark of quality, and that's never debatable

You got that right! Fought the PC battle for years and finally about a year or so ago I said it is time for quality. Never regretted that decision. As they say "it just works...:-)

cheers to all the .mac people!

by the way I also don't see any similarity between the looks of the pacifica and R other than the fact that its the same type of vehicle.

I have felt the quality in the R and think it's pretty good, the actually only thing I find a little cheap on the ML and a little more so on the R is the silver trim that is just plastic painted silver....

Other than that seems to be a pretty solid car.

nice auto show pics.. I guess I'm a bit unfairly critical of the R... just can see spending $67,000 on a Made-in-Alabama.. don't know why?

How many "quality" or "exclusive" automakers have not built crossovers/ SUV's?

Lets see, hmmm, Porsche sold out with the Cayoureg, BMW X5, Benz ML and now R class.

What's next, the Bentley SUV? The Bentley Continenal X? AWD grocery getter?

How about the Ferrarri No-testosteronousa?

The Lamborghini Hybrid Murcielago Xuv?

The Rolls Royce Green Phantom Hybrid LX

Dude I am down with a Bentley SUV. I would love a Ferrari SUV as well.
Lamborghini already has the LM002.
Rolls Royce SUV would be over the top though.

Bentley, which I maintain is really no longer in business as the world knew it for decades, is now a higher end division of VW/Audi, as such the new Bentley SUV is going to be a direct knock off of the Audi SUV that has been announced, but with finer interior materials, and a bit more HP I'm sure.

Which is why I said I'm down with the Bentley SUV.
Lexus needs some competition in the ultra luxury capable SUV market with the G not selling so hotly.

If I need an "SUV" thats both ultra lux, and actually capable of going off road, I'll get a pre-BMW Ranger Rover.. Not reliable, but far more capable off road than anything I know off, except maybe the H1.
