Ideas on making my r500 handle better please!

I have an r500 with the regular suspension, no air ride. Any way to get rid of the excessive body roll/wallowing? More specifically, anyone know of any 1.5 inch lower tighter springs available with stiffer anti-sway bars aftermarket? Thanks. Z

Zax63,

Please let us know how things work after you make the change. I have an 07 R500 and am interested in improving its handling. I autocrossed it last summer and was able to beat two drivers of an E320 until the husband got more comfortable with the limits of his car. I plan to drive my 89 Volvo S90 this summer since Autox tires for it will be cheaper than the suspension mods and tires for the R-class.

talked to a shop today who said if you do the springs, you should do the struts...and he is still looking for anti-sway bars that are upsized... I'll let you know if I do it. Nice work on the autocrossing. Those dudes in the e320s were going home with some shrinkage! I'd probably autocross the E63, but the r500 would be kinda funny... Z

I'm told it did look kinda funny. With the all-season tires (Continentals) and stock suspension, the transitions through the slalom and some of the wider turns must have looked scary. I ran tire pressures of 48-front and 42-rear.

What struts did the shop recommend? The stock ride is wonderful and I find the daily handling, including road trips and commuting on the I-95/I-395 HOV lanes exhilerating. The car is able to slalom through traffic quite smoothly once you get used to the extra length of the vehicle.

he is still trying to figure out the struts that would fit... since my wife drives the car most of the time, I am inclined not to go too crazy, I was just annoyed after driving the thing on the Merritt the other day at extralegal speeds... does not quite take to it like my ride. I may just leave it alone if it means 3k worth of work... he can't find sways either, suggested looking into R63 sways which I imagine would be priced astronomically.

My transition was from an SL500 to the R500. In addition to the different roll and yaw characteristics, I had to adapt to the additional wheelbase and body length. Every choice has its consequences... .

zax63 - did you ever decide to do anything on the R500? we have a 2000 E320 wagon that i'm thinking of swapping into the R because it just seems like such a great trade-up for the money($22-25k) at auctions. since i'm coming from regular E/S-class, i'm hoping i won't be as disappointed w/ the handling.
btw, how's reliability been for you on the R? how's your mileage on that vs. your E63?
