garage door opener range?
Hey, my garage door opener sucks...sometimes I'm right up against the garage, and it still won't open.
You guys have that issue too? All my other cars can open the garage like, down the street.

I was under the impression the home link transmitter was infrared, because mine is directional meaning it only opens when I'm directly in front or in line with the opener. I can pull in my drive a little crooked and it won't open, I have to back up and straighten out before it triggers.

My '07 R350 has the same problem. I have to almost be touching the garage door with the front of the car before it will work. Same issue at our cottage. My '06 E350 works fine at both locations. I have Hormann openers installed at both locations. Is there an adjustment for the gain, a tweak for the antenna, or an improved design replacement? Could this be related to the infrared reflective coating in the wildows and the placement of the antenna?

Although an old thread maybe I should clarify. As funkeyro alluded to, the reason that SOME R Classes have very poor range for the garage door opener is due to the infrared reflective glass (for the windshield and front windows) if the car is equipped with the three zone climate control package. Cars without the IR glass have a real long range like many other MBs.

Mine works at about 75 yards. My house is situated in such a way that it's difficult to test at greater distances and so that it's unreasonable to expect anything better.

I appreciate your response last year to my inquiry. I think you are right about the IR or UV coatings on the windshield. This does not, however, explain why the Hormann tiny little hand held remote powered by a 1.5 volt disc battery, which is mounted on the visor very near the rear view mirror, has 5 times the range as my $70,000 car with a 13.5 Volt monster battery and charging system. I want the name of the engineer at Mercedes Benz who designed this ridiculous system. I have had Jaguars, Fords, General Motors, and BMWs, and none of them have this problem.

Just to continue for a moment... I went to the time, trouble and expense of replacing the rear-view mirror assembly which houses the transmitter for the garage door universal remote transmitter with absolutely no change in the range. It seems we have a plausible explanation, but I want a fix! It is not adequate to simply say, "We use e-glass in some models, so sorry." Have they done something to correct this poor design in newer models? Has anyone come up with a modification to fix this?

I've tried holding the button, but it doesn't help. I'm sure it's the special glass that is inhibiting the signal, as it also supresses my original remote for the garage door, and I have to hold it out the window or sunroof.

Mine will open the garage door from 40 ft. facing the opposite direction. You may have a shielding problem with something in the line of sight or within your garage area specific to your R. Or just could be a one off, it's possible but not likely.
Good luck figuring it out.

Interesting, my R500 will trigger the door from at least 200 ft away. It's far enough that the door is fully open by the time I reach the garage.
On a side note, I replaced all of my chain drive garage door openers with Sommer units about 3 years ago. Best garage door opener I've ever seen. Super quiet. Great range with all our cars. And good speed. Also comes with a tiny remote that operates up to 4 doors.

Highly recommended if your garage door opener dies. We had one die and based on the performance, I had the others replaced with Sommer units too as they were all 10 year old chain drive units and noisy as hell. Now you can't even hear a door when it's operating.
