2006 R350 pre-wired for bluetooth

I just checked with my local dealer. The parts department pulled up my VIN and informed me that my 2006 R350 is actually "pre-wired" for phone. However, it does not have the "cradle and etc." The complete installation with everything (including the $400 Bluetooth device) is $1500 (parts & labor). Parts alone is about $8-900 (including the bluetooth device).

My question is... Have anyone actually open up the center console and pull the wire and install everything by himself/herself? Is that a hard job to do?

Melvinh, search the forums for discussions on BT. My understanding is there is a BT doohicky that is to be installed into a cradle inside the console. It retails for ~$400. There is no wiring required. Once installed, setup is straightforward through firmware in the Comand and the doohicky. Google Mercedes bluetooth module for more info.

Actually on a 2006 R350 JR - there is no cradle like the 2007 R350 had. So you actually have to install the telematics unit and all the other related stuff to get the phone working and then you install the bluetooth dongle. I looked into this a couple of years ago when i got the R and it is pretty involved as some stuff goes under the passenger seat and may require the removal of the seat itself. After looking into it and the cost, I decided it was not worth it. Of course if you are willing to dish out that much money let the dealer install it for you as it will require coding for it to work.

At a recent meeting of the GWS-MBCA for new members, the Treasurer said that he has the BT module available for possible sale. He has an alternate BT solution working and doesn't need the device. I would have made an offer but My Wife would have laughed at me. If she only knew how convenient it would be... . She drives the car daily and uses her BlackBerry w/o benefit of a headset.

I opened my 2006 R350 console today and found that there is prewired for phone (I saw a jack and mini-UHF connector).
I guess we need a Cradle Eliminator Cable Kit plus BT module then the phone system should work.
There is few information on the internet about R350.
Hope someone can share if they had successfully installed the kit.

Can you please tell me if you have the "small Black box" in the center console? or was it flat?

How do you open it up?

I used T10 torx screw driver to remove 2 screws on the hinges and 3 on the bottom of the false floor of the center console. After you open it up then you can see there is prewired.
The false floor only has a mark of adapter shape where suppose to install the MHI adapter.
I contacted my dealer to install a hand free communication system for my 2006 R350. They give me a quote $2100 to complete the installation but your dealer only quote you $1500. Where is your dealer located?

The dealer is Smythe European in San Jose. Quote me $1500.

However, if you really find that there is "pre-wire", the parts will only be around $8-900 (including bluethooth device, which is almost $500 at dealer). If you buy the Buetooth device from ebay, you can save another $100-300 depends on how much you can get it. So, the parts isn't that much. I estimate around $5-600.

Smythe dealer told me that if there is pre-wired, it's not that hard to do it yourself.

However, I called another dealer Besoff Motor. The guy told me that the head Nav unit all have to come out and it's very big job??? Quote me over $2000!!!

I assume if it's pre-wired, the wires must already connect to Head Unit. Perhaps, you can drive to dealer and confim which is true!?

Phone Control Module

I believe that we still need a phone control module which will be connected between the "pre-wired" part and Head Unit.

Here is the parts I think it must be installed onto our "prewired" system.

Mine has a "knock out" in the center console for the adapter. I have Telematics and mine is a late 2006 model.

Also I've read that for the phone book to be loaded it has to coded/synched by the dealer.

I can attach pictures of the knock out if u want.

2006 bluetooth

the 2006 pre-wire without cradle in the armrest means you have to install the core kit and the completer kit and its a big job. i have the same situation and every dealer i ask quote between 1200 to 1500 in the michigan area.

the job involves removing the 2nd row and 1st row passenger seat to access the floor under that to install the 2 kits in there.

i am researching hard to find this out, i will post more details or if i do it myself.
