Pano Roof is driving me crazy

I have an 06 R350 with Pano Roof that will not stop popping and cracking everytime I take a slightly sharp turn, or hit a bump in the road. The noises can not be narrowed to a specific area, it is generally the whole thing that is making noise. I have taken it to the stealership, where they proceeded to take two full days to tell me they could hear the noise but would need more time, so the Master Tech could take a look. With no loaner vehicle, I declined so I could get my truck back from the wife.

Has anyone out there had this problem with their Pano Roof?
Is there a DIY solution for this problem?

Happily I haven't experienced such a problem but my concern is that the dealer will not give you a loaner. I'm on Long Island and have dealt with 2 different dealers with our MBs and they both have delivered to my home loaners and picked up my vehicles. And the past winter we were in Fla and incurred a problem and called the local MB dealer who told us they would loan us a car if they couldn't immediately find the problem. Try another dealer. You are not locked into just one dealer.

Well to be honest I was given the opportunity for a loaner, but I would have had to wait a few days until one became available. I was near the stealership so I decided to go ahead and drop it off without a loaner. I assumed a couple days would be ample to solve a creacky pano, but I was obviously mistaken. I thought I might be able to fix it myself. I read something about a "Felt Fix" for a similar problem, but never found the actual thread, which is why I decided to start this Thread for the R class. Thank you for your reply

I think I have the same problem in my R500. Pano roof is rattling when driving on bumpy road and sometimes when turning and going over bump/curb there's loud "bang" coming from somewhere in the rear. I'll have next service within a week or two and I'm going to get this checked by the MB SD.

Well apparently it can be fixed. It is good to know this "cracking noise" is not normal, but obviously an issue. My wife and I really do love this vehicle, but this noise really does cheapen the whole Mercedes experience. Let me know how it goes for you.

I have the same noise. I left the car with the dealership and they fixed it for me. It was perfectly quiet for a month or two until i went on a rocky road trip and the noise came back. Luckily, it is much quieter than before and I don't notice it much now. I guess there is a design problem.

I've had my '06 w/ pano for almost 60k miles now and haven't had one problem at all. The one time I did have some popping was the day after I was driving with the sun roof open. After opening and closing the pano a couple of times and allowing/making sure the felt was securely fit on the track, poof, no more popping/creaking.

Oh, and the loud bang/bump you hear coming from the back when you're turning is the tool-kit located underneath the shelf in the rear. It's held onto by two velcro straps that move.

My '06 E55 recently had the same issue wiht the pano roof. Took it to the dealer and the lubricated the roof and tightened some things (I'm not sure what) but it was covered under warranty and has zero problems now.

I have some poping noise when it's warm. It's whisper quiet in the cooler weather. Not so sure if I want to bring to dealer to fix yet...

I bought 3 month ago a R350 '06 and have the same issue of squeaking noise from the roof when driving. I am going to the local dealer this week to see what can be done.

Do you know if it is covered under the extended 160 000km waranty ?

Regards

Claude

Same issue had been in my R350 for a whole year, it drove me crazy too!!! noise came from rear and I could not find which part was cracking. First I thought it's from the rear door and I went to local dealer, but they couldn't fix it after adjusting doors and replacing two rear door locks. one day I found the noise gone when it's raining, then I went to the dealer immediately and let them check again. Finally they confirmed it's from the roof and dismantled it, replaced the rubber strip and reinstall the roof. Now it's quiet, I'm happy just like driving a new vehicle.

It's covered under warranty(BTW, I'm in China, we don't have extended warranty).

would love to know how you guys solve the problem, thanks.

It happend again today!

But noise is from the left front door instead of roof, very noisy on the bumpy road, FML!

I have to go to the dealer tomorrow to see what makes this distracting noise.

Same problem here. My son, riding in the back, confirmed that it is coming from the sunroof. I'm also starting to hear some noise again from the door seals which had previously been lubed and adjusted. I also hear the 'thump' sound in the trunk area when I go over a speed bump, which I think might be the toolbox as mentioned above.

Will be taking it in on Wed. to it checked out. I hope there's a PERMANENT solution to these issues.

ct r500,

I think it's impossible to find a permanent solution. R class is a noisy machine, not only the roof but also the rear doors, I had my two rear locks replaced, the roof reinstalled and door seal lubed...but the noise came back very soon every time!

According to the service adviser, all R class have is noise, some owners are not sensitive, they are happy.

Wish you luck, I will try again if you succeed.

I can't believe Mercedes manufactures a "noisy" machine.

Had I known, I'd bought the Beamer.

Wife's panoroof failed on vacation. It would only move a couple inches at a time until closed. Now it's stuck. The blinds won't move, nor will the glass tilt. The fuse is ok. I followed the reset procedure in the manual. No luck. Off to the dealer.

I should also mention that the roof got considerably quieter after it failed. Before it locked up, it was squeaking like crazy.

I'm thinking about buying an R-class with Pano roof for south Florida. Any problems with heat gain in bright sunshine?

Well the R5 has been in the shop since Wed. They are replacing the entire sunroof assy. They also identified noise coming from the front axle (a known problem) - which they are also replacing. They are also working on the door seal issue. They are also doing an alignment (my dime) just to make sure everything is running smooth. Should get it back on Mon - NOISE FREE!?

I had my R500 at the dealership for service + all these warranty issues. Panoroof had couple screws loose, they said screws were rolling on the panoroof slides or something like that. They did something but it's still noisy, not that bad but still rattling.

I also got front door seals replaced, they were cracked. + one rear door lock assembly replaced as it was hard to close (+noisy instead of silent "thumb" like other doors), lubricating didn't help.

This is kind of noisy machine but I have always been sensitive for all side noises coming from my cars and tried to fix them. Sometimes put $$$ to fix some issue with my previous (quite old) Merc which didn't finally even fix it Maybe I just need to stop listening all those noises and just enjoy the ride

I think maybe you just have a seriously loud machine or possibly a bad car. Mine is relatively quite, and creak/squeak free over the last almost 60k miles.
