Road Trip & Luggage question

Hello my W251 fellows,
I'm about to do a road trip with the R-class with 5 other people..
But I highly doubt we can squeeze in more than 2 luggages in the back with all the seats up.

What are my options? Roof rack and a cargo box? Will a full size Rimowa fit in those boxes, or do I have to use those duffel bags?

Thanks in advance!

With 5 people I just fold down one of the 3rd row seats and use that space to stack suitcases.

I have an 08 R 320.

My medium sized roof top cargo carrier is huge and will take a lot and is very securely attached to the car. (I've done a 100 mph with it & it didn't vibrate.)

I also have the hitch on my car, installed aftermarket by the dealer, and I had a cargo carrier made for it that is steel under an aluminum pan with full lighting. Easily it can hold 300 pounds and you don't know it's back there. I have a plastic weatherproof box that goes on it and it's been great.

The carrier was made by the local high school shop class. I pay for the materials and the labor is free. Then I had it powder coated so it will not rust. With the LED lights, I think I have $150 in the whole thing.

Good luck

I'd love to see pics of your home-made box.

Cheers

About the carrier:

I had a local high school welding shop class build it for me. Cost of the metal was about $75.

Took the white part for powder coating and that was $20. The aluminum pan and lights were added after that. Lights were about $40.

I can pick it up with 1 finger. It holds my body weight of 240, but I only carry messy stuff on it to keep the car clean. (I do fire extinguisher safety training and don't like putting the burn pan or fuel can inside the vehicle.

If I need extra storage, I could put a large plastic tote or box on there if need be.

It makes no noise and I'm glad I have it.

That is cheap ($89.00) for option 1.

Harbor Freight also has a larger version of option 1. It is intended for mobility scooters but it looks like just a larger version of #1 and has ramps. I almost bought it to carry firewood on our camping trip but it was out of stock.

I think I saw the coupon for this in Maxim or Road and Track...and in the add, $20 off! so it's $59!
