Changing Oil

Changing Oil
I have a 2006 R500. I bought it used. Are there any problems with changing the oil myself. I had it done at the dealer but it cost around $200. Wondering if I could do it myself for less.

Yes, much less.
You'll need a 74mm oil filoter wrench, whci can be had on eBay or some auto places.
You can either use a pump to suck the oil out the dipstick tube or drop the front pan and drain the oil pan. The pump can be found on eBay for about $50-75, Northern Tool, etc.
You can buy filters at Partsgeek.com (and many more places on-line) and the oil at any auto parts place.

Yes. I change my own oil.
I do not like the idea of an oil sucker. I remove panel covering the bottom of the engine. Then I remove the drain plug.

Yes same here, I remove the drain plug. I think sucking the oil out does not get all the oil out.
Also the front strut tower brace needs to come off to get the engine cover off. If you try to pull the cover off without removing the strut tower brace you will break the heat sheilds in the back of the cover. The strut brace comes off with 4 bolts, 2 on each side. I think they were 17mm's.
I reused the copper crush washer on the drain plug. Alot of people say to replace with new because they leak, however I have never had a problem with using them a few times.
Good luck!

9 l oil = 100 $ + tax
filter = 25 $ + tax
Question: how much is one hour for labor ? some places 50 $, some 100 $ ...
I am paying around 180-200 $ (I am asking mechanic to check other things while I am there). Oil change can be done on any place but you don't have too many people experienced in diagnostics.
my 0.02 $

Vacuuming the oil out the dipstick tube indeed "gets all the oil out."
It's designed for this, after all.
Or perhaps one could relate his chemistry and statistics training to explain how 99% (max you could possibly get out) is SO significantly much better than 98%.
The washers are called "crush" washers and can only be crushed once.

The drain plug washer can be re-used, it is just like any other drain plug washer. I have re-used mine twice with no leaks.
I wait for an oil sale. at or under $21 per gallon. I stocked up 12 quarts at thanksgiving for a $4 per quart oil sale.

I have reused the crush washer in my bug tdi about 14 times, no leaks. As far as I know it's the original.

It is really futile for folks to come to these forums and get advice not created by Mercedes. Anyone looking for such advice can easily own a service DVD from Mercedes and get the real story--you NEVER know what you're getting on a forum but you DO know that free is worth what you pay for it.

Here's an extract of the official procedure:

Hmmmm......so the 2500.00 dollar "official Mercedes procedures" guide speaks of draining via the drain plug.....
The washers can be re-used but shouldn't be. I buy my filters at the dealer for 12.00 and they always throw in the washer.

Looks like I'm paying too much for my oil changes as well. Just wondering how critical it is to use the MB specified engine oil & filters. Would the Mobil 1 available at say, Canadian Tire be good as well? What about Mann oil filters?

It is not critical to use European mobil 1 0w-40 engine oil.
I use Hastings or mann oil filters, those are OEM spec. i get them from usautoparts.com or autopartswharhouse.com

Having them compiled for you on a DVD will run around $100. Enough with fear mongering, please.
Yes, the official procedures cover drain plug--probably so they can advise to not reuse the washer--since it's not designed for it. Engineering, you know.

I change my own oil by vac out of the dipstick. Super easy (and I've seen them do it this way at dealers!). I do use the MB recommended 0x-40 Mobil 1 oil and buy Mann filter from autopartswarehouse.com (Part #: W0133-1632767 $11.74). I get the oil from Walmart for $6.47/qt so the total comes to about $70 a change.
I have the MightyVac (bought from Amazon) and it gets enough oil out that I must add 9 qts each time to get up to the max line on my dipstick. To me, this means I am getting all of the oil out (manual says it holds 8.6 qts). Granted, draining from the pan will remove any debris sitting down there while sucking it out won't. I figure with 8.5 qts that debris likely stays down there anyway (and synthetic oils keep all other contaminants in suspension). Maybe every 4th or 5th oil change I'll bother jacking it up and draining form underneath (I will certainly replace the crush washer each time).
