I just used the recommended Mobile 1. Inside of my engine compartment, it had a sticker with the info.

Just use a high quality synthetic with the proper spec. Mobil 1 10w30 or 10w40 is good. You can also use Royal Purple, ELF, Amsoil, and Motul.

you are best to stick with a MB 229.5 or the newer 229.52 oil spec ( the 229.51 is for diesel only)
this website will give you many recommended oils

The gasoline engines are a lot less picky than the diesels, but yes, to be safe go to the dealer and buy the oil from them.

The 229.5 isn't suitable for anything after 2006 on account of it fouling the emissions systems and not being able to deal with the soot that gets in it.

There are a lot of oils and specs you can use in the gassers.

Where/why do you understand this? I also have a 2008 R320 CDI and it wants 229.51.
is this from your dealer? because 229.52 was not available until recently.
Dealers near me have for about a year topped selling Mobil 1 ESP for diesels (229.51) and are now selling 229.52 for what I believe is all engines.

Where do you get this?

your maintenance manual should provide oil spec by engine type.

Even the 2012 R class owners manual specifies the following:
R 350 BlueTEC diesel engine type 642 oil spec sheet 229.51
R 350 gas engine type 276 oil spec 229.5

so to all the posters and the OP. Look at your owners manual !
you can also search web for MBUSA information on this. It's not rocket science!

MB updated the spec on the diesel oil. Likely because of recurring DPF issues, but that's just speculation.

But yes, the dealer, and here

The Low Ash formulations are recommended for diesels with particulate filters, which not al the 229.51 seem to meet it. This info seems a little spurious, but better safe than sorry.

Ok, now I am confused. I thought all I needed was 5w-30 mobile one full synthetic. Not sure I have ever looked or known any other 229.51 52 or anything else. I have a 2008 r350, what am I suppose to be buying? That list seems to have 0w-30 and 5w-30.

Sorry for the confusion. Sometimes information is too much information. If you are unsure, you can always play it safe and buy oil from the dealer, it's usually not that much more expensive than retail.

The diesels require a low ash formula, but the gasolines do not. The 229.52 is the new spec and should be followed for diesels because of the temperamental emission systems.

Is your R350 a diesel or a gasser?

Gas. I was just going to buy mobile 1 full synthetic. 5w-30

Mobil 1 has a European Formula, which is good for your car - select the grade based on your climate. Unfortunately, this is rarely on sale - other non-Euro formulas often go on sale for $25 for 4.4L jug, but the Euro formulas seem to stay put at $16/L (oil at the dealer is cheaper at about $11/L). I notice that using the Euro formula I burn less oil between changes.

I'm in Canada BTW, so volumes and prices reflect Canadian measurements. 1L = 1.057qts.

See:

http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub...l_1_0W-40.aspx

For your R350 use the Mobil 1 0w40 European Car Formula. This is what the MB dealer used to sell before going to their proprietary brand. It is not suitable for diesels with particulate filters.

That was the plan until i started reading this thread. The rebate is only one per household, but I may know a few households to use.
