Keyless Go Module Replacement

Just wanted to post my findings as there are no good answers out there with all of my web searching.

Had a keyless go module fried due to water in the spare tire compartment. Scouring the web, new replacements were $700+, and there were no matching part numbers on ebay for used parts. Armed with the knowledge that the ML/GL and R series shared many parts, I looked for a ML/GL keyless go module. Lo and behold, I was able to find a 164 module that had the nearly the exact same label, with the only difference being the part number for $40 on ebay. Plugged it in... and it worked! Push button work, hold handle to unlock worked, black button to lock worked. So there you have it, ML/GL computer parts are directly compatible with R parts. Just match up the SW and HW numbers.

Original part number: A 251 820 12 26
Equivalent ML/GL part number: A 164 820 55 26

5WK48089 ECU
SW: 06/05/00
HW: 37/04

Attached pictures of the labels.

Great detective work and thanks for sharing. Did you have to reprogram the module/keys? Or does the computer control that info and this unit is just the “sender/receiver”

The module is located underneath the spare tire on the passenger side. I have since relocated it to the vent area underneath the 3rd row seats after water intrusion fried the replacement, again (cables are just barely long enough to reach).

No reprogramming required, just plug in and go.

Thanks. I’ve heard of water issues in the wheel well. Could you locate how it entered the area?

Took the whole interior side panel off in the rear and still couldn't find it. Leak is somewhere between the back of the sunroof and the rear hatch, but it seems to be coming in internally through the body/frame, and it's impossible to access those areas without cutting something open.

Hi, does anoyne know what the ref. number stand for? Mine also got fried due to water in the spare wheel compartiment, and I found an interesting match on Ebay. Here's the number I have on my Class R500 5.5l:
A 251 820 33 26 (Siemens 5WK4 8206)
And here is the one on Ebay (advertised for Mercedes ML):
A 164 820 62 85 (Siemens 5WK4 9601)
Thanks!

Has anyone considered drilling a small drain hole in the trunk so water wont accumulate? Sounds like this is a real issue and a route for the water to escape would be seem like a good idea.

There is a drain hole. The problem is the rubber one way valve in the drain hole can get clogged. If you are that concerned, you can easily remove the valve.

I thought of removing it, but then I did not, thinking the water and/or humidity might come from below the car.
