Did you do the tail lamps/brake lights too? interested in knowing if you've had any problems.

No plans to do the tail lamp/brake lights (those in red). Maybe the turn signal ambers under the clear lens part rear and front in the near future. Will post, if I get there.

Previous owner did it on mine. The W251 uses PWM to dim the brake bulbs, which I believe are 1156. Previous owner had to rig in resistors, presumably so it would work without errors. I think the reverse lights, front parking lights, and front side markers are the only ones that can use LEDs without using resistors.

Keep it going!

Great thred!
just bought a 07 R350 for the wife and kids, everybody lovs it!
The R class has that funky look to it so it needs some small things done, like tinted Windows and trim, rims, stereo and lighting.

This is giving me inspiration for ours

Got my headlights all taken apart today and attempted to replace the projectors. Word of advice, do not replace with anything other than the EvoX-R 2.0s unless you want your headlights to look funky. The distance from the mounting point to the lens is about an inch shorter. This is probably easily remedied on halogen cars due to the fact that they don't have anything fancy, but HID cars have the auto-leveling and turning systems, which makes modifying the brackets near impossible without breaking something. The turning of the projector will cause the shroud to pop off.

That said, I'm not a huge fan of the EvoX-R 2.0s. All of the light intensity is in the hotspot and there is very little width in the lights. I will probably try to figure out how to make the current Mini D2S 5.0 work as I would prefer the additional width. I also had to do some modification on the E55 adapter bracket, primarily due to the fact that the housing that it mounts to is somewhat smaller than the bracket. It wasn't hard to modify though, just some trimming required.

Looks like you’re making good progress! I’m currently preparing for a oil cooler seal change.

I am contemplating this amg style grill. It would look awesome on your blacked out R! Not sure if there is a pre facelift version.

Onnzo: give you major props for doing the hard stuff! Yeah, I want to change the grill, but no options on Ebay or other sites. Not much $ for aftermarket companies to invest in R&D for a cool grill for my R. They don't even have clear corner lens! LOL. So, my plan is to just black out the grill as is to go with the "blacked out" theme. I have a few more parts to install and this project will be over.

#14 Replace Interior Bulbs to LEDs.

Sorry for the blurred photos (they're extracted from video). If they last for 1 year, I'll be happy haha. If I owned a LED bulb company, I would make 2 sets. One (bright) to use in the exterior of car; Two (less bright) to use in the interior of car. Check out the main dome light, its too freakin' bright! You have to wear sunglasses. It does have a WOW factor haha.

EDITED:

I know our R class does not get much love in these forums, but thanks for everyone who commended. I just looked at my plan sheet and have SIX (6) (EDITED: NINE (9)!!!) more update/restore/make-over projects left to complete and I AM DONE with the 10th Anniversary update project. It was fun so far, but after the remaining 6 9 projects, GLAD to move on. From there on it just be regular maintenance and repair jobs (I see new tires needed soon)...the NOT FUN STUFF.

Got the Morimoto Mini D2s 5.0s to fit, and it wasn't that hard at all. Mounting it on the front of the housing bracket allowed it to align perfectly with where the original lens was. A grinder and some spacers were all that was necessary. The blue tint also looks really good. I'll post a writeup in a separate thread but here's a completed picture. The old projectors were burned out, so this will be a good upgrade. Please excuse the clutter.

I don't have on car and output shots yet as I was busy troubleshooting the adaptive headlight system. Turns out you really don't want to remove the alignment wheel if you can avoid it. Maybe time to buy a Xentry system, unless someone has one I can borrow in the SF Bay Area.

Hi, may I ask where you found these, and are them of good quality? I had bought cheap ones from Aliexpress, but they tend to fall while driving after some time.

Wow, I'm impressed. I myself changed all the bulbs with LED ones bought over on Aliexpress (designed for class R), but the result is terrible. They blink like anything most of the time. Feels like the place is a disco.
Any clue why and what is your secret to having it to work properly?

The Merc center caps are genuine parts from dealership. I use genuine parts if available. I only use knock offs if Merc doesn't sell it or doesn't sell just the piece I'm looking for (e.g. the sunroof button - I'm not gonna buy the whole damn main unit for a button with a design flaw!) lol. It's more expensive in the beginning but lasts way more and wears better than cheap knock offs. If you replace knock offs due to fade, falling off, etc., than genuine cost is that not bad IMHO. You should get LEDs bulbs that are Canbus style for Mercs, but unfortunately, that doesn't guarantee it'll work. I just tried different brands. But with this too, the more expensive bulb tended to work better vs. the ultra cheap ones.

#16 Sunroof Button Repair.

I really think the Merc's sunroof button design is bulls*t. It moves in 3 separate directions (up, down, back), yet is only supported by 2 tiny tiny prongs in the front and 2 in back!!! No wonder Ebay sells a ton of options for these buttons. I don't even use the sunroof much, but noticed the 2 front buttons are broken. So, even though I don't use it much, it bothers me that it is dangling loose. So, it was in my 10th year project list. Repair done!

Merc, just make 2 separate push type buttons and no prongs! Save us the grief.

#17 Semi-Repair of Rearview Mirror.

Frustration! The rear view mirror is loose, which I don't mind. But, when it movies around when going over bumps, it's bothering. I read up some ideas on the forum/internet and tried the cable tie method. Seems a little tighter, but not satisfied. There is a metal ring that goes over the ball joint. The cable tie goes over the ring as tight as possible, but I'm having mediocre results. Took it all apart again and put a piece of paper towel in the ball joint. Problem solved! Also cleaned the unit and wrapped the wires with cloth electric tape to cover the deteriorating wire foam (see photo).

Have only SIX more things to do but I think it's turning out pretty good. Hopefully, I can drive it for another 3 years without getting the itch to buy a new SUV.
