American Car Buyers are Idiots! I love my R!
What car can you drive your family of 5 to Lake Tahoe comfortably and safely in the snow?
What car can you shove most anything from Ikea on the weekends?!
What car can you then go get lumbar from your local home improvement store to make a fence? Try that with a Range Rover! (see photo).
You can make an argument for the GL (w/ Captain Chairs only), but it costs more, is higher when loading, worse handling due to height, and worse MPG!
Benz, you messed up - should've marketed as a wagon NOT a SUV cuz majority of American Car Buyers are Idiots! Too bad it's gone. Snap up all the good ones out in the world. China is lucky b/c Benz up to now have sold newer versions.
Please out!

Speaking of crossovers, the current crossover rage is just as ridiculous. The only thing they have is a higher ride height (read: worse handling) over normal sedan-based wagons and hatchbacks.

I guess GLS is the only alternative, but damn so expensive! Oh well, as long as there are parts for the R, I will keep mine running.
If you Google R-class, most say, "MB mini-van flops in US" "Did you know, MB, once, had a mini-van? It's true! "
I definitely don't classify her as a van, but she is a bit lower than and SUV (Buick, Cadillac) but she's AWD! And once I get her oil leak found and fixed, I am gonna never be home.

I've always wondered if the R Class was conceived by a fan of the 1995 John Travolta film Get Shorty, in which the main character was forced to rent a minivan (Olds Silhouette?) at the airport and kept trying to pass it off as cool.
Anyway, as others have said, what is wrong with American car buyers? This is a fabulous design. Hopefully it will prove to be reliable.

Since then, we've replaced my daily driver with an E400 wagon, and recently my daughter bought an R350 after moving to Indiana.
The R Class is an amazing design, and for most American SUV buyers the R would probably have been a better choice, as long as six seats are enough, they don't need to tow anything heavy, and they don't need legit off road capability.
It's sad that MB chose to build so many crossovers and scrapped the R Class, but they know their business better than I do.
